  • The South African government said on Tuesday that ailing icon Nelson Mandela remains in a "critical but stable" condition after more than one month of intensive hospital treatment.
  • An Egyptian security official says 650 people, mostly backers of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, have been detained for allegedly trying to storm a military facility, an incident the military claims sparked violence that left more than 50 pro-Morsi protesters dead.
  • At least 18 people were wounded by a car bomb blast in Beirut's southern suburbs on Tuesday, a stronghold of the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah militant group that has been fighting in Syria's civil war.
  • Japan faces increasingly serious threats to its security from an assertive China and an  unpredictable North Korea, a defence ministry report said on Tuesday, as ruling politicians call for the military to beef up its ability to respond to such threats.
  • Revelations by former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden will make it harder for the United States to confront China at talks this week over the alleged cybertheft of trade secrets worth hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

  • The Supreme Court today reserved its order on gangster Abu Salem plea for quashing trials against him in various cases after the Portugal court terminated his extradition to India for "violation" of deportation rules by authorities.
  • With rains hampering aerial operations in rain-ravaged Kedarnath area, the Army today said it is opening a new land route to the holy shrine on the request of the Uttarakhand government.
  • In an effort to check illegal plying of transport vehicles, the Punjab government today decided to set up inter-state computerized check posts at the entry points of borders of neighbouring states.
  • Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today said it will initiate an inquiry into reported leakage of certain video clips of couples getting intimate at metro stations to pornographic websites.
  • A religious procession will uniquely have Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as part of its security cover when the 136th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath begins at Ahmedabad tomorrow morning.

  • Tracking firm global cues, the BSE benchmark Sensex today rose by nearly 115 points led by bluechips, including HDFC Bank and Sun Pharma, in step with a smart recovery in rupee.
  • India on Tuesday hiked the import duty on sugar to 15 percent from 10 percent to curb import sugar whose price has fallen considerably in the international market.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advised banks to complete account opening process in all the districts which direct benefit trasfer (DBT) and nominate a Complaint Redressal Officer in each district to address depositors grievance.
  • Excise duty evasion of over Rs 100 crore has been detected by central revenue department during searches carried out at the premises of cigarette manufacturers in various states of the country.
  • Snapping its three-day losing streak, gold prices recovered sharply Rs 280 to Rs 26,830 per 10 grams in the national capital today on fresh buying by stockists and investors at prevailing lower levels amid a firm global trend.
  • Skoda Auto India on Today launched a special edition of its entry level sedan Rapid, priced between Rs 7.79 lakh and Rs 9.06 lakh (ex showroom Delhi).

  • England captain Alastair Cook has predicted "one hell of a battle" ahead of the start of the first Ashes test against Australia at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.
  • Sacked Michael Nobbs on Tuesday said he was not "pushed out" from Indian hockey team chief coach's position, instead he willingly resigned from the job owing to his deteriorating health condition.
  • Sent in to bat, India lost Virat Kohli (31) after the skipper added 49 runs for the second wicket with Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka in their last must-win league match of the tri-series at Port of Spain in Trinidad.
  • New Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has thanked Sir Alex Ferguson for his Wimbledon success, adding that the legend told him to concentrate throughout the match for consistency.
