International Affairs
  • China today said it was ready to "break new ground" with India to resolve the boundary dispute as the Special Representatives of the two countries held 16th round of border talks to find a solution to the vexed issue.
  • The US Senate has passed the landmark comprehensive immigration reform bill which provides a pathway to citizenship to more than 11 million undocumented people, including over 240,000 Indians.
  • US is willing to work with Bangladesh to restore the suspended Generalised System of Preference (GSP) benefits if it improves workers' rights and conditions, a top American trade official has said.
  • CEOs representing top American technology companies including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Cisco have hailed the passage of the comprehensive immigration reform bill by US Senate, arguing that this would give a big  boost to the economic growth and attract high skilled workers.
  • Special Representatives of India and China will hold the 16th round of boundary talks in Beijing, the first such meeting under the new Chinese leadership, to make another bid to move forward on the resolution of the vexed dispute.

National Affairs
  • Finance minister P Chidambaram said that the Union Cabinet has approved Mumbai metro line 3. The estimated cost for the metro project has been pegged at Rs 23,136 crore.It will be completed by march 2019.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which met yesterday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has approved a proposal to nearly double the price of natural gas to about $ 8.4 per mmBtu from April 1 next year which, in turn, could have an impact on power, fertiliser, cooking gas and compressed natural gas (CNG) prices.
  • The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to the proposal of signing of a headquarters agreement between the Ministry of External Affairs and Nalanda University. This agreement would confer on the University and members of its academic staff privileges and immunities considered necessary to provide an overall framework for the efficient functioning and operation of the University, and allow it to obtain talent from across the globe. The Agreement will come into force immediately upon signing and notification.
  • The anti-drug agencies in Goa have raised concern over the illegal narcotics detoxification centres mushrooming along the state's coastline and decided to crack down upon them.
  • Rubbishing rumours of withdrawing from the BJP-led Goa government, its ally Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party has said that it will continue with the alliance in the Lok Sabha elections.
  • The number of the endangered brow-antlered deer stands at 204 in its lone habitat in Manipur's Keibul Lamjao National Park in Bishenpur district as per the latest census.
  • Naga people from all walks of life today came to the streets protesting inter-factional clashes and harassment meted out to the public by armed Naga underground groups in the state capital.

Economy
  • Stating that the decision to almost double pricing of natural gas is influenced by economic reality of the country, Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said that declining and stagnant production of gas not good for the economy.
  • The government has cleared the proposal of private sector lender YES Bank to raise Rs. 2,650 crore through qualified institutional placement (QIP) from overseas.
  • The government today decided to reimburse Rs 719.41 crore to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for losses incurred while buying the fibre at minimum  support price operations in the cotton season 2012-13.


Science and Technology
  • India will launch two communication satellites (GSAT-15, GSAT-16) over the next two years to augment transponder capacity.

Sports
  • British No.1 Andy Murray has said that he feels that defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer may never again regain his levels of consistency and domination like before, following his exit from the tournament on the heels of Rafael Nadal.
  • International Cricket Council chiefs hit back on Thursday at claims they failed to investigate concerns over the correctness of last month's vote for player representatives on its cricket committee.
  • Shane Watson is fired up by the prospect of opening for Australia in the upcoming Ashes series in England, the all-rounder said.
  • The men's doubles first round match featuring Indo-Czech fourth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek was suspended on Court 7 as rain halted play at Wimbledon on Thursday.
