INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
  • Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping opened their crucial first summit, both calling for a new approach to relations between the US superpower and China, the rising giant.
  • Two FARC rebels and a Colombian special forces soldier were killed in a firefight that broke out in the country's southwest when the army occupied a guerrilla camp, authorities said on Friday.
  • US and Venezuelan officials will meet soon for talks that could lead to the countries exchanging ambassadors for the first time since 2010, Venezuela's foreign minister has said.
  • Legal expert Munir A Malik, who played a key role in the lawyers' movement against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, was today named Pakistan's new Attorney General.

SCIENCE
  • Scientists on Saturday called NASA's Opportunity rover gimpy and arthritic but hailed its new discoveries about early water on Mars made 10 years after it was launched toward the Red Planet.The unmanned solar-powered vehicle has just analysed what may be its oldest rock ever, known as Esperance 6. It contains evidence that potentially life-supporting water once flowed in abundance, leaving clay minerals behind.

  • Rio's olympic stadium  will be used for track and field in the 2016 Olympics will remain closed until 2015 because of structural problems with its roof.
  • Defending champion Saina Nehwal's hopes of retaining her Thailand Grand Prix Gold title went up in smoke as she suffered a shocking three-game defeat to Singapore's Juan Gu, while promising youngster K Srikanth entered the semifinals of the men's singles event in Bangkok on Friday.
