How To Answer the Banking Interview Question "Aren't You Over Qualified for this Job / Position ?"

We had to update an Individual post for this question because its the most obvious and important question of Banking Interviewers which decides the fate of the Aspirant. Unfortunately most of us are unable to give the convincing answer for this question. Believe it or not friends, this question represents the FEAR of the Interviewer. The FEAR of Losing you after spending some thousands of bucks on you to recruit you and train you.

Yep... lets see the problem from the Bank's point of view. As you might have known, in the year 2009  a huge recession has hit the Software Industry. So, there were no jobs for IT Professionals. A Nationalized Bank which has its origion in South India has published its notification for recruitment of Clerks. Our Jobless IT Professionals wrote this exam and obviously got selected for the posts. By the year 2010 they got appointment orders from the bank. And at the same time the recession got lessen and almost all of them got jobs in Software field. So all these aspirants left their bank jobs (without even joining them) and settled in Software Field. There were almost 812 Candidates who left the bank at the same time. Bank spent approx 20k per candidate (from the date of interview to his training). Now just imagine the Bank's Situation!!!
Now lets discuss the problem in our point of you. Just keep in mind that Banks don't like to hire overqualified people because they won't stay around long. So you just have to make them believe that you never gonna leave the Bank till the dooms day. Just admit that you are over qualified (no need to hide anything, ofcourse you cant), but also emphasis the positive side of your qualification. For example you can answer like this, "Ofcourse Sir, I am overqualified in some ways.  But that doesn't means I am not suitable for Banking. I have more technical knowledge and patience that is required for Banking. I feel that I have much to learn in the area of banking, and I know it will keep me challenged . Ofcourse I can choose the job of my qualification, but I found Banking is an interesting area where I can get Job Satisfaction and Job Security as well".

Note : If you have less percentage in your Graduation / Post Graduation, then don't hesitate. Just show them your Less Percentage as a reason for joining in Banks. It may sound stupid. But trust us... Its really gonna work. They will surely feel that you never gonna leave Bank (because you don't have any other option). You can start your answer as "Due to my less percentage, I couldn't get satisfactory job of my area. Then one of my uncle told me about  the opportunities in banking. Then I came to know that This is the ONLY area where I can get job satisfaction as well as job security with my LESS PERCENTAGE". Now they will leave the main question and will ask you about the reason behind the less percentage. Just make a convincing answer for this... Problem Solved ;)

That's all for now friends. Hope it helps.... Feel free to use the Comments Box below if you have any queries and comments. All The Best

    1. AXIS bank is a private sector bank friend. So you cant make a convincing answer for this question. But in your case, you have a strong reason i.e., JOB SECURITY... You can mention this as your point...

My brother faced this question at the time of Interview and his answer was something like "Its due to my negligence at that time... Later realized it, but unfortunately I was unable to rectify my mistake... So I worked hard and the result, I'm infront of you giving Interview.......", Now hez working as a Po in Bank of Baroda

    1. Well, no need to be afraid Reji.. They never gonna ask you to read or write in Regional Language. But they will ask questions in Regional Language.. so you have to communicate with them in the same language... Better don't say you can't read and write unless they ask... Coz it may make -ve remark on you...

  10. Thanks4 this tip. I want 2 ask wat will b the appropriate answer for question "Were u placed in campus placement ?" Like 4 me; i m selected in Tcs & my joining is on 25 march; If i say no for this ques then they will surely not believe in my capability (as i hv vry gud academics).. Nd if i say yes,i m recruited in Tcs; then they wont gonna recruit me !!... Plz help wat to do ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the first thing is.. its not a Software Job.. and the banks are not recruiting you based on your Technical Skills... So better say them NO... You can convince them later by saying that you are Interested in Banking area so you dint attend any Campus Interview...

BTW which post you are applying for?
For Pos its ok.. but for Clerks, leaving a job in TCS is not advisable... Better re think about it..

    2. Hey Shiv, Thank you for your info.Actually even iam facing a kind of situation that was discussed here.Actually i have been working in a reputed IT company for past 1.2 years.I have been short listed for SBI Associates clerk. As of now i dont find much time to prepare for PO exams. As you know competition is increasing day by day and also the standard of PO exam will be high.So iam planning to quit my current job and join as a clerk in SBI Associates,if iam selected and planning to prepare for upcoming SBI PO.Is that a good decision? What i thought was i will be able to prepare well then as well as i would have gained some 4 to 6 months experience as a clerk by the time i get selected. Can you please give your suggestion?

      Delete
    3. Well, I donno whether I can talk like this or not... But as you asked me for suggestion I am saying this...
You have been working in an reputed IT company since 2 years.. that means you might have been drawing minimum 30k per month. Now you are planning to leave that job for the sake of PO.... Well the problem is SBI is unpredictable.... Your score depends on the performance of you and your mindset at the time of the exam. You may get some unpredictable problems at that time and chances are there for you not doing good in the exam (hey, i'm not discouraging you here... just trying to analyze the situation from another side. So can you wait for another 2 years even if you lost one chance? (will your age support you to write two more exams?), are you willing to work as a clerk even you cant make it to PO? please ask these questions yourself...

If your target is PO and not Clerks, better dont leave the job... Try to manage the time and prepare... So that there wont be any regrets in future..

      all the best

    1. Typical question Krishna... Unfortunately now a days banks are fearing to hire graduates for clerical posts with this very same reason. Because no graduate (especially technical)want to end his career as a clerk. Better tell them that Better tell them that you tried it for 2 or 3 times but couldn't get so you have decided to join as a clerk and work hard so that you can reach PO in coming 4 to 5 years (ofcourse its not true.. but convincing).

      hope it helps

    2. Hi mam I m preparing for ibps rrb clerk interview if the interviewer asks why u not go for ibps clerk ? What shall I do?

  13. Hi admin, Good Evening... Thanks for all the help you are providing to help us achieve success... But I faced problem while answering a particular question during a RRB PO Interview.. The Question was : "You are a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, and presently pursuing M.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering..that too from one of the most reputed universities of the country... You will get much better opportunities after completing your M.Tech... So why Banking...?? Also How will ur qualification help the bank...?? "

I was expecting this question but I was not able to prepare a satisfactory answer to this question... What I had said was "Since my father is now retired for over 3years, I am in urgent need of a job, and when I saw that any graduate can apply, I applied for the job."
I felt that though my interview went well ( as I was able to answer almost all the other questions)my answer to this particular question did not satisfy the interviewers, so I was not selected.

Please kindly suggest a good, satisfactory answer to this question.

    1. Just think once Swarnadip. YOu have a small stationary shop and you are conducting interview to the post of Salesman. Here your requirements are not only good looking, talkative but also the person SHOULD work with you for long time. Will you select an MCA graduate who is in urgent need of Job? NO, because CHANCES are there for him to LEAVE your shop if he gets better job. The same thing happened in your situation too.

They might thought that you are joining with them because you are in Urgent need of a job and you will leave them if you get any better job.

So in these type of situations you should make them believe that You never gonna leave them at any cost. Using words like "Dream Job", "Job satisfaction" may do the trick.

      All the best :)

    2. you have to make them believe that u and your B.tech and M.tech engg is beneficial for them. u have to say that "this engg had given u a good communication skill, so this will be beneficial for us to interact with the customer for good output, and also I am a engg student so I have the ability to solve some technical problems."

  14. Quoting abt less percentage - y do u hav to throw mud on ur self. instead u can highlight positive points. when u quote abt low marks, wont the bank people question, so u r nt capable of getting a job in other domains? no way u can call urself incapable.
