International Current Affairs
  • Today (21st November) is World Hello Day.
    • Aim : To express that conflicts should be resolved through communication rather than the use of force.
    • This day began in 1973 in response to the conflict between Israel and Egypt and since then over 180 countries have taken part in the event.
  • Today is World Television Day.
    • The United Nations has designated this day, recognising that television plays a major role in presenting different issues that affect people
    • It seeks to celebrate the philosophy of television, a tool which represents a symbol for communication and globalisation in the contemporary world. 
    • 21st of November has been chosen for this day because on November 21-22, 1996 the UN held the first World Television Forum.
  • 1st India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise IMBAX 2017 was held at Joint Warfare Centre at the Umroi Joint Training Node in Meghalaya.
    • This is first of its kind military training exercise between India and Myanmar on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO).
  • US President Donald Trump today declared North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, subjecting the reclusive nation to additional sanctions. 
    • Other nations on the list include Iran, Sudan, and Syria.
  • The European Commission is going to propose a 40% quota for women on company boards in an effort aimed at tackling gender inequality in the senior ranks of publicly listed companies. 
    • The commission will also publish proposals to redress the gender pay gap. Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden had blocked previous attempts to implement the quota.
  • India and Russia have agreed to implement visa-free entry for the flight crew of scheduled and chartered flights between the two countries.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (21st November) is World Fisheries Day
    • On 21st November 1997, the working fishermen and women representing World Forum of Fish Harvesters & Fish Workers from 18 countries met at New Delhi and established the World Fisheries Forum (WFF) advocating for a global mandate of sustainable fishing practices and policies.
    • To commemorate this occasion, every year 21st November is celebrated all over the world as World Fisheries Day.
    • In India, it is being celebrated for the fourth consecutive year.
    • This year the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, is celebrating this day at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) Complex, New Delhi. 
    • This year’s theme : “2022 Ka Hai Sapna … Kisan Ki Aay Ho Dugna - Sankalp Se Siddhi”.
  • The 42nd World Congress of the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM) was held in New Delhi
    • It was organised by Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), Ministry of Defence (MoD). 
    • It was the largest medical conference ever organised by AFMS.  
    • It was attended by around 350-400 foreign delegates from 80 countries.
    • The five-day event was being organised for the first time in India. 
    • Theme of this edition of World Congress : “Military Medicine in Transition: Looking Ahead.”
  • Shah Rukh Khan on Monday inaugurated the 48th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. 
    • Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Shahid Kapoor, Sridevi, and AR Rahman were among the others who attended the event.
      • Note : Shahid's half-brother Ishaan Khatter's acting debut 'Beyond the Clouds' was the inaugural film.
      • The Indo-Argentine film Thinking of Him by filmmaker Pablo Cesar will be the closing movie of IFFI 2017.
      • Amitabh Bachchan will be awarded the Personality of the Year award at the closing ceremony of the event on November 28.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has signed an over ₹630-crore loan agreement and a ₹13-crore grant agreement with the World Bank, in an attempt to increase its power generation capacity through renewable energy sources. 
    • Under the agreement, the Shared Infrastructure for Solar Parks Project will finance the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency which will give sub-loans to select states for investment in solar parks.
  • Government has signed 4 MoUs under Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) Scheme with Nagaland and UTs of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu for operational improvements. 
    • These MoUs will pave way for improving operational efficiency of Electricity Departments or DISCOM of these State/UTs.
    • Note : With this, 27 States and 4 UTs have joined UDAY till date.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • California-based investment fund HigherOrderVC and journalists from across the world have teamed up to create PressCoin, a new cryptocurrency to provide financing for investigative journalism
    • The PressCoin is aimed at empowering independent journalists to fight fake news. 
    • It will be offered at an initial price of $1 through a 28-day initial coin offering (ICO) beginning November 22.
New Appointments
  • India's nominee Dalveer Bhandari was re-elected to the last seat of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), after Britain withdrew its candidate. 
    • Bhandari won 183 of the 193 votes in the General Assembly and all 15 votes in the Security Council in the 12th round of voting after there was no clear majority in the first 11 rounds.
Deaths
  • Former world number one doubles and number two singles champion Jana Novotná (49) died  due to cancer today. 
    • Apart from her Wimbledon singles title in 1998 and 24 WTA singles titles in 14 years, the Czech won 12 doubles and four mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. 
    • Novotná was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian luger Shiva Keshavan will make his sixth appearance at the Winter Olympics as he qualified for the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
