  • Step back - to stop for a moment in order to consider something
  • Sustained - continuing at the same level or rate for a long time
  • Stand-off - a disagreement or fight in which neither opponent can do anything to win or achieve their aim
  • By all accounts - according to what people say
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Counsel - to give someone advice about what to do in a particular situation
  • Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Liberation - freedom and independence
  • Preserv - to keep something as it is
  • Pilgrim - someone who travels to a holy place that is important in their religion
  • Coincidence - a situation in which separate things happen by chance at the same time or in the same way

  • Obviously - in a way that is clear for almost anyone to see or understand
  • Misleading -intended to make someone believe something that is incorrect or not true

  • Sovereignty - the right to rule a country
  • Spurn - to refuse to accept something, do something, or deal with something
  • Maritime - involving ships or the business of moving people and goods in ships
  • Uptick - a small increase
  • Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Dialogue - formal talks between opposing countries, political groups, etc
  • Defusing - to make a difficult or dangerous situation calmer by reducing or removing its cause
  • Precondition - something that must happen or be true before it is possible for something else to happen
  • Apart from - except for or not considering
  • Status quo - the present situation
  • Treaty - a written agreement between two or more countries, formally approved and signed by their leaders
  • Face-off - if people or groups face off, they compete or fight with each other
  • Sovereignty - the power of a country to control its own government
  • Exemplary - very good and suitable
  • Escalation - the process of becoming greater or more serious, or a particular situation when this happens
  • In the face of something -  despite having to deal with a difficult situation or problem
  • Aggressive - behaving in an angry and violent way towards another person
  • Barrage - the action of continuously firing large guns to protect soldiers advancing on an enemy
  • Discreet -  careful not to cause embarrassment or attract too much attention
  • Win over somebody - to persuade someone to support you or agree with you, often when they were opposed to you before
  • Caliph - a Muslim ruler
  • Caliphate - an Islamic state, especially one ruled by a single religious and political leader
  • Atop - on or at the top of
  • Minaret - a tall, thin tower on or near a mosque (a Muslim holy building) from which Muslims are called to pray
  • Retreat - to go away from a place or person in order to escape from fighting or danger
  • Confine - to limit an activity, person, or problem in some way
  • Torturous - involving a lot of suffering or difficulty
  • Casualty - a person injured or killed in a serious accident or war
  • Resistance - the act of fighting against something that is attacking you, or refusing to accept something
  • Elsewhere - at, in, from, or to another place or other places; anywhere or somewhere else
  • Turnaround - an occasion when a business, plan, or system suddenly becomes successful
  • Nominal - very small
  • Alarming - frightening or worrying
  • Defend - to protect someone or something from attack

  • Jihadist -  someone who is engaged in jihad (a holy war or fight that Muslims take part in to defend Islam)
  • Militia - a group of ordinary people who are trained as soldiers to fight in an emergency
  • Conflicting - describes two or more things that cannot all be right or cannot all happen at the same time
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Uneasy - slightly worried or uncomfortable about a particular situation
  • Forge - to work hard to achieve something
  • Replicable - that can be done in exactly the same way as before, or produced again to be exactly the same as before
  • Displace -  to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
  • Insurgency - an attempt by a group of people to take control of their country by force
  • Predecessor - the person who had a job or official position before someone else
  • Subsequent - happening or coming after something else
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Restive - unwilling to be controlled or be patient
  • Simmering - something that is simmering is controlled but may burst out at any time, often violently
  • Sectarian - caused by disagreements among people from different religious groups
  • Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
