Meet the Man Booker prize 2016 winner : Paul Beatty

A contemporary U.S author, Paul Beatty has won the Man Booker Prize for the year 2016. He won this award for his novel "The Sellout". With this win, he became the first American to be awarded the prize in its 48-year history. The Sellout, set in LA and which includes the fallout from the unjust shooting of an African-American at the hands of the police, was described by judges as a "novel of our times".

About the book "The Sellout" :

• The novel takes place in and around Los Angeles and concerns a protagonist who grows artisanal marijuana and watermelons.
  Beatty has stated his motivation for writing the novel was that "hewas broke".

About Man Booker Prize 2016

• First Awarded in : 1969 
• This prize carries a top cash award of ₤50,000 ($76,000)
• Last year's winner : Marlon James (Jamaica) for his book “A Brief History of Seven Killings"
• Note : The award, which was open to only Commonwealth, Irish, and Zimbabwean citizens earlier, widened to all English language novels in 2013.
