The National Award winning tamil crime-thriller Visaranai, directed by Vetrimaran and produced by Dhanush, is India's official entry for Academy Awards 2017 (OSCARS) in the Foreign Language Film category. "Visaranai was selected out of the 29 films that were in the race," Film Federation of India secretary general Supran Sen announced today.

The critically-acclaimed film based on police brutality is adapted from M Chandrakumar’s novel Lock Up.

Based on lives of four migrant workers who are accused of a crime they never committed, Visaranai
shows these migrant workers from Tamil Nadu being picked on by the police in Guntur. This leads to them being enmeshed in a web of crime and politics and they are finally killed in an encounter. The movie has similarities to some real-life events.
The movie won three honours (Best feature film in Tamil, best supporting actor for Samuthirakani and best editing for Kishore Te) at the 63rd National Film Awards, held earlier this year. The film premiered in the Orrizonti (Horizons) section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival, where it won the Amnesty International Italia Award.
The other Tamil films to be officially selected in the past for the Oscars are : Jeans, Indian, Kurithipunal, Devar Magan, Anjali, Nayagan, Deiva Magan.

In 2016, India had sent Marathi film Court as the official entry for Oscars. The 89th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place in February 2017 at Los Angeles.
