Topic 1 : "Managing the Cauvery dispute"

  • Cauvery - Kaveri river
  • Dispute - a disagreement or argument
  • Judicial - involving a law court
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Resolves - to solve or end a problem or difficulty:
  • Executive - someone in a high position
  • Constitute - if several people or things constitute something, they combine to form it
  • Regulation - an official rule that controls the way that things are done
  • Prescribed - decided by a law or a rule
  • Tribunal - a special law court organized to judge a particular case
  • Award - a judgment given by a court of law
  • Irrigation - to supply land with water
  • Agronomist - the study of crops and the types of soil they grow in
  • Basin - the area of land from which streams run into a river, lake, or sea
  • Formulate - to develop a plan, system, or proposal carefully, thinking about all of its details
  • Distress - an unpleasant and difficult situation caused by a lack of basic things
  • Exposes - to make something publicly known
  • Helplessness -  unable to do anything to help yourself or anyone else
  • Inter-State - existing or taking place between states
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Pave the way - to create a situation that makes it possible or easier for something to happen
  • Interim - temporary and intended to be used or accepted until something permanent exists
  • Gazette - an official newspaper that publishes lists of people in government, legal, military, or university jobs
  • Significant - very important / noticeable
  • Nudging - to push something or someone gently
  • Framework - a system of rules, laws, agreements etc that establish the way that something operates in business, politics, or society
  • Equitable - fair and reasonable because everyone is treated in the same way
  • Supervisory - in charge of people or activities
  • Quantum - the smallest amount or unit of something
  • Apart from - except for someone or something
  • Adjudication - to make an official decision about a problem or disagreement
  • Accommodation - a change in behaviour or attitude that helps people work together or end a disagreement
  • Yield - to make a profit
  • Take a hard look at something - to examine something very carefully in order to improve it in the future
  • Cultivation - the use of land for growing crops or plants
  • Water-intensive - involving a lot of water
  • Surfacing - raising / appearing

Topic 2 : "Putin tightens his grip"

  • Tighten your grip on something - to begin to control someone or something more strictly
  • Outcome - the final result of a process / activity
  • In question - if something is in question, there are doubts about it
  • Protracted - continuing for a long time, especially longer than is normal or necessary
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Attrition - the process of making an enemy physically and mentally weaker by continuously attacking them
  • Neighbourhood - the people who live near each other
  • Sanction -  an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Contracted - to become smaller in amount or quantity
  • Shrink - to become smaller in size
  • Conventional - of the usual, traditional, or accepted type, instead of being new and different
  • Wisdom - the ability to make good decisions based on knowledge and experience
  • Hardship - something that makes your life more difficult or unpleasant
  • Trigger - to make something happen
  • Incumbency - an official position
  • Retained - to keep or continue to have something
  • Partly - mostly or usually
  • Hardly - only just; almost not
  • Hindered - to stop someone or something from making progress or developing
  • Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote in an election
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Barred - to officially say that someone must not do something
  • Anarchic - not showing respect for official or accepted rules, behaviour, organizations, leaders, etc
  • Era - a period of time that has a particular quality or character
  • Prompting - the action of encouraging or reminding someone to do something
  • Stick by someone - to continue to support someone who is in a difficult situation
  • Credited someone with something - to say or believe that someone is responsible for a particular achievement
  • Stable - not changing frequently and not likely to suddenly become worse
  • Under his watch - under his control
  • Self-imposed - self-imposed rules, punishments etc are ones that you have chosen for yourself
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal
  • Retreat - to change your ideas, opinion, or decision because of criticism or opposition from other people
  • Annexation - to take control of a country or region by force
  • Combative - ready to fight, argue with, or oppose someone
  • Elsewhere - some other place
  • Persist - to continue to exist
  • Muscular - very strong and attractive
  • To pay a heavy price - to experience the bad result of something you have done
  • Shambles - something that is very badly organized and that does not operate effectively
  • In the wake of something - if something happens in the wake of something else, it happens after and often because of it
  • Credible - able to be believed or trusted
  • Stormy - involving a lot of anger or arguments
