Topic 1 : "Triple whammy"

  • Triple whammy - a situation when three unpleasant things happen at almost the same time
  • Egregious - extremely bad
  • Employ - to use someone
  • Instantaneously - happening immediately, without any delay
  • Consent - permission or agreement
  • Merely - just / only
  • Uttering - to say something
  • Rendered - to cause someone or something to be in a particular state
  • Subsequent - happening after something else
  • Practice - something that is usually or regularly done, often as a habit, tradition, or custom
  • Unaware - not understanding or realizing something
  • Pronouncements - an official announcement
  • Owing to - because of
  • Conservative - not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
  • Undergone - to experience something that is unpleasant or something that involves a change
  • Severe - very serious
  • Trauma - a bad experience that makes you feel very upset, afraid, or shocked
  • Victim - someone who has been hurted or killed as the result of a crime
  • Arbitrary - based on chance rather than being planned or based on reason
  • Domestic violence - violent or aggressive behaviour within the home
  • Litigation - use of the legal system to settle a disagreement
  • Wield - to have a lot of influence or power over other people
  • Predictably - as expected
  • Regressive - relating to behaviour that is not responsible or controlled
  • Affidavit - a legal document containing a written promise that something is true
  • Defended - to protect someone or something from attack
  • Custom - something that people do that is traditional or usual
  • Resort - the fact that you have to do something because there is no other way of achieving something
  • Patriarchal - ruled or controlled by men
  • Aligned - to give your support publicly to something
  • Dubious - not completely good, safe, or honest
  • Polygamy - the custom of having more than one husband or wife at the same time in societies where this is legal
  • Undesirable - not wanted, approved of, or popular
  • Asunder - into forcefully separated pieces
  • Sanction - official order
  • Injunction - an official order to stop someone from doing something
  • Irrevocable - not able to be changed
  • Derecognised - withdraw recognition of something
  • Arbitration - the process of solving an argument between people by helping them to agree to an acceptable solution
  • Pronouncement - an official announcement
  • Swayed - to cause something to move or change
  • Pursue - to try to achieve / get something
  • It is high time - used for saying that something should be done soon

Topic 2 : "Sri Lanka conquers malaria"

  • Conquer - to deal with or successfully fight against a problem
  • Interrupted - to stop something from happening
  • Consecutive - continous (follow one after another without any break)
  • Priority - something that is very important and must be dealt with before other things
  • Endemic - very common, or strongly established in a place or situation
  • Contracted - to become ill with a disease
  • Commendable - deserving praise (used to formally praise someone or something)
  • Initiative - an important action that is expected to solve a problem
  • Adopted -  to decide to start using a particular idea, plan, or method
  • Two-pronged - involving two stages
  • Strategy - a detailed plan for achieving success in difficult situations
  • Vector - an insect or animal that carries a disease from one animal or plant to another
  • Parasite - an animal or plant that lives on or in another animal or plant of a different type and feeds from it
  • Undertaking - something difficult or complicated that you do
  • Residual - remaining after most of something has gone
  • Irrespective - without considering
  • Symptom - any feeling of illness or physical or mental change that is caused by a particular disease
  • Asymptomatic - showing no symptoms of a particular disease
  • Reservoirs - a large supply of something
  • Mobile -  easy to move and use in different places
  • Surveillance - the careful watching of something
  • Oriented - aimed
  • Enhancing - improving
  • Expanded - to make something become larger in size
  • Long-lasting - continuing for a long period of time
  • Insecticide- a chemical for killing insects
  • Premature - happening or done too soon
  • Incidence - the rate at something happens
  • Precise - exact and accurate
  • Eradication - to get rid of something completely or destroy something bad
  • Resistant - not harmed or affected by something
  • Significantly -  a way that is easy to see
