International Affairs

• US President Barack Obama led the UN Security Council in unanimously approving a binding resolution on stemming the flow of foreign jihadists to Iraq and Syria.
• Prime Minister Modi left for the United States this evening to attend United Nations General Assembly in New York.
• In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly today, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi  described terrorism as a plague.
• He says Islamic extremists must not be allowed to abuse Islam and called for intensifying efforts to fight them.
• The United States bombed Islamic State-controlled oil refineries in Syria today as President Barack Obama recruited more allies to fight the jihadist "network of death."

National Affairs

• The government declared September 25 as 'Antyodaya Diwas' in memory of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, one of the key leaders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh from which the BJP later emerged.
• PM Narendra Modi has launched the ambitious 'Make in India' campaign.
• Modi says India is an opportunity for investors; Government to push the share of manufacturing in GDP to 25 per cent from 15 per cent, says Nirmala Sitaraman.
• It is aimed at making India a manufacturing hub by attracting foreign companies to set up their manufacturing units.
• The famous Mysore Dasara that marks the beginning of Navratri commenced today.
• The Supreme Court declared the National Tax Tribunal Act as unconstitutional under which a tribunal was set up to decide tax-related cases by taking away jurisdiction of high courts in such matters.
• BJP Ends 25-Year-Old Alliance With Shiv Sena in Maharashtra
• This is one of the oldest political alliances in India
• This is over with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena deciding to fight the Maharashtra Assembly elections alone.

People in News

• The Calcutta High Court today ordered the lodging of an FIR and a CID probe into Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal's controversial "shoot and rape" remarks against opposition party supporters and women during public meetings in his Krishnagar constituency in Nadia district. 
• Early July, footage had emerged of Mr Pal addressing meetings of party workers and saying that if any of his workers were attacked, he would "set his boys" on women relatives of CPM workers and get them raped.

• US Secretary of State John Kerry has appointed Nancy Powell, the former US Ambassador to India, as Ebola Coordinator at the State Department.

Science & Technology

• Just hours after making history by being the first Mars mission to succeed in its first attempt, Mangalyaan was already at work, and has sent back a set of data, including high-quality images of the Red Planet.
• The first image, as seen here, has been taken from a height of 7,300 km; with 376 m spatial resolution, as posted by ISRO.
• Scientists from ISRO present this first image of Mars taken by Mars Orbiter to the PM Narendra Modi.
