International Affairs
  • Today (19th August) is World Photography Day.
  • Today is World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
    • This day is observed every year on 19 August to recognize work of humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
    • Theme of the year 2016 : “One Humanity”. 
  • India has ranked 66th in the 2016 Global Innovation Index (GII). 
    • In this edition, India has jumped up by 15 spots from 81st position in 2015 GII. 
    • The annual index was released by France-based international business school INSEAD and World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Bangladesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Route Permit for carrying Petroleum Goods to Tripura via Bangladesh
    • The MoU was signed between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Roads and Highways Department of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

National Affairs
  • Cricket icon and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar has selected Donja village in Osmanabad district for development under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna.
    • About Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana :
      • Launched in October 2014, is a rural development programme focusing on development of villages which include social and cultural development, and spread motivation among the people on social mobilisation of the village community.
  • The Maharashtra Government became first state in the country to launch India’s first comprehensive ‘Crime Criminal Tracking Network System’ (CCTNS) in Mumbai. 
    • It was launched through the operationalisation of 42 cyber laboratories across the state in order to combat growing cybercrimes.

Awards & Honors
  • Hindi scholar and writer Sunita Jain was today awarded the prestigious 25th Vyas Samman 2015.
    • She was honored with this award for her poetry collection "Kshama".
  • The Uttar Pradesh government today announced to honour Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik who won a bronze at the Rio Olympic Games with the prestigious Rani Laxmi Bai Award.

Business & Economy
  • The State Bank of India’s (SBI’s) board of directors has approved merger of its five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with itself
    • These five subsidiaries are,
      • State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, 
      • State Bank of Hyderabad, 
      • State Bank of Mysore, 
      • State Bank of Travancore and 
      • Bharatiya Mahila Bank.
  • The India Post Payments Bank Limited (IPPBL) has received the Certificate of Incorporation from the Registrar of Companies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs under the Companies Act 2013
    • Note : IPPBL would be the first PSU under the Department of Posts (DoP). 
  • To make mobile payments easier, ICICI Bank has launched a payment service using a smartphone keyboard named ‘iMobile SmartKeys’.
    • Users will be able to make quick and secure payments on any mobile application, including chat, messenger, email, games or search browser, without having to exit their current application on their smartphone.
    • This reduces the time taken by customers having to switch tabs or applications within their smartphone to access the bank’s application ‘iMobile’.

Sports
  • Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav was banned from all competitive sporting events for four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) based in Lausanne, Switzerland. 
    • He was banned by CAS following an appeal by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as there was no evidence to accept his claim that his food was spiked by banned doping substance. 
    • With CAS ruling, Yadav’s suspension begins immediately and he will not be able to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics. 
    • Note : He had qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 74 category of freestyle wrestling event.
