Pope Francis Dies at 88
Who Was Pope Francis?
Pope Francis was born in Argentina on December 17, 1936. His real name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Before he became a priest, he studied science and worked in a lab. Later, he decided to become a Jesuit priest and worked with poor and sick people in his hometown.
In 2013, he was chosen to be the pope after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down. He was the first pope from South America and the first Jesuit pope. He chose the name “Francis” to honor Saint Francis of Assisi, who is known for living simply and caring for the poor and nature.
What Did He Do as Pope?
Pope Francis wanted the Church to be more caring and open. He often said that the Church should focus on love, kindness, and helping those in need. He spoke up for people who were poor, refugees, and those who felt left out.
He also cared a lot about protecting the Earth. In 2015, he wrote a letter called Laudato Si’ asking people around the world to take care of the planet and stop pollution.
Pope Francis lived a simple life, even as pope. Instead of living in a fancy palace, he stayed in a small guesthouse in the Vatican. He often spoke directly to people, even using social media to share messages of hope and love.
His Final Days
Pope Francis had some health problems in the last few years. In early 2025, he became sick with pneumonia. Even though doctors tried to help him, he passed away peacefully on the morning of April 21, 2025, in Rome.
His Legacy
Pope Francis will be remembered as a pope who cared deeply about people, especially the poor and the planet. He helped the Church become more open and loving. People from all over the world are sharing prayers and memories to honor his life and leadership.
