India dropped 2 spots to rank 131st among 189 countries in recently released Human Development Index (HDI) 2020 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Last year (2019) India ranked 129 in the index.  As usual, the list was topped by Norway, followed by Ireland (2nd) and Switzerland (3rd). Niger stood at the last position with 189th rank, followed by Central African Republic (188th) and Chad (187).

Despite the lowe rankings, UNDP announced that this doesn't mean India didn't do well, but others did better. UNDP Resident Representative Shoko Noda in fact praised India's commitment to reduce carbon emission and said that India can help other countries too. However, they agreed there's room for India for further improvements.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) compiles the Human Development Index (HDI) of 189 countries in the annual Human Development Report. The index considers the health, education and income in the country to provide a measure of human development which is comparable between countries and over time.
