  • Today is World Milk Day
    • This day was initiated on 1st June 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to celebrate all aspects of milk as a global food.
    • Important Note : Don't be confused this day with National Milk Day. National Milk Day is different. We observe National Milk Day on 26th November to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien.
    • Theme of World Milk Day 2019 : "Drink Milk: Today & Everyday"
  • Today (1st June) is Global Day of Parents.
    • This is a United Nations (UN) observance to honor parents and their commitment to children worldwide.
  • Puerto Williams (Chile) has become world’s southernmost city after its status upgraded from hamlet to city. 
    • Note : Puerto Williams took over the title from Ushuaia (Argentina) which was world’s southernmost city till recently.
  • India has moved up one place to rank 43rd most competitive economy in world in annual competitiveness rankings compiled by International Institute for Management Development (IMD).

National Current Affairs
  • On World No Tobacco Day (31st May), the Indian Council of Medical Research recommended a complete ban on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, including e-cigarettes, saying their use can initiate nicotine addiction among non-smokers. 
    • ICMR said e-cigarettes adversely affect the cardiovascular system, impair respiratory functions in a way similar to cigarette smoking and cause severe respiratory diseases.
  • The Rajasthan government has decided to ban production, distribution, advertisement and sale of e-cigarette in the state.
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi today approved a scheme to control the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis, two diseases which are common amongst the livestock. T
    • he scheme envisages vaccination coverage to 30 crore bovines, 20 crore sheep or goat, and 10 million pigs. 
    • The scheme has a total outlay of ₹13,343 crore.
  • The Punjab government has decided to make it mandatory for all online aggregators to ensure that food supplied by them have hygiene rating as per the guidelines of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
    • All the online order and supply companies should display the hygiene rating of all the food business operators registered or affiliated with them.
  • The Greater Noida authority has approved a 14-km Metro link that will directly connect Delhi and Greater Noida via the Blue Line.
    • Although the link will be a part of the Delhi Metro network, it will reportedly be built by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation and funded by the Noida authority. 
    • The project is expected to cost ₹1,500-2,000 crore.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • US President Donald Trump has said the country would end its preferential trade treatment for India on June 5.
    • Note : India is the biggest beneficiary of the US' Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
  • The government today extended the ₹6,000 per year PM-KISAN scheme to all farmers in the country. 
    • The revised scheme envisages to cover around 2 crore more farmers increasing the coverage of PM-KISAN to around 14.5 crore beneficiaries.

  • The Cabinet in its first meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved a new scheme, which assures minimum monthly pension of ₹3,000 to all Shopkeepers, Retail traders and Self-employed persons after attaining age of 60 years. 
    • The scheme will benefit three crore retail traders and shopkeepers. 
    • Five crore traders are expected to join the scheme in the next three years.
  • Pakistan has approved a fund of 2,000 crore Pakistani rupees (₹930 crore) to help boost its stock market. 
    • Note : Pakistan's stock market has been one of the world's worst performing over the past two years. 
    • The fund is expected to invest in government-owned entities and would be activated if those stocks were to decline in value.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted a 6 member committee to review existing state of mortgage securitisation in India and suggest measures to develop market further.
    • It shall submit its report to RBI by the end of August 2019.
    • Head of this Committee : Harsh Vardhan (Senior Advisor, Bain & Company)
  • The RBI also constituted a 6 member task force to suggest policy and regulatory interventions required for development of secondary market in corporate loans, including loan transaction platform for stressed assets.
    • Head of this Task force : T N Manoharan (Canara Bank Chairman)
Awards & Honors
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected the Rajasthan government’s Medical & Health Department for its award this year in recognition of its achievements in the field of tobacco control.
  • Former President Pratibha Devisingh Patil was conferred the 'Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca' (Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle), Mexico's highest civilian award given to foreigners.
    • She's only the second Indian head of state, after late former President S Radhakrishnan, to get the award.
New Appointments
  • The government has created the new Ministry of Jal Shakti by reorganising the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. 
    • Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Member of Parliament from Jodhpur, will head the ministry. 
  • The youngest minister in the Cabinet is Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani at the age of 43.
  • The oldest is Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan at 72.
  • 2 days after taking oath as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government, Amit Shah today took charge as India's home minister
    • This is the first time Amit Shah is holding any position in the Narendra Modi-led central government.
