  • Competitor - someone who takes part in a sports competition
  • Shoot yourself in the foot - to say or do something stupid that causes you trouble
  • Revoke - to officially say that something is no longer legal, for example a law or a document
  • Rapid fire - a rapid-fire weapon is designed to fire bullets very quickly
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Heighten - if something heightens a feeling or emotion, or if a feeling or emotion heightens, it becomes stronger
  • Bilateral - a bilateral agreement or activity is one that involves two groups or countries
  • Charter - an official document describing the aims, rights, or principles of an organization
  • Discrimination - unfair treatment of someone because of their religion, race, or other personal features
  • Interference - the process of deliberately becoming involved in a situation and trying to influence the way that it develops, although you have no right to do this
  • Supreme - most important, or most powerful
  • Clamour - an urgent request for something by a lot of people
  • Perceive -  to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Scrap - to decide not to continue with something such as a plan or an event
  • Commonwealth - a group of countries that have the same political or economic interests
  • Sparing - using only a little of something
  • End up - to be in a particular place or state after doing something or because of doing it
  • Collateral -  valuable
  • Consequence - a result or effect of something
  • Severe - a severe problem is very serious and worrying
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Put something into cold storage - to decide not to do or use something until later
  • Precedent - an action or event in the past that is used as an example or reason for a present action or event
  • Turn down - to not accept an offer or request
  • Played out - to develop or end in a particular way
  • Egg on - to strongly encourage someone to do something that might not be a very good idea
  • Yesteryear - from a time in the distant past
  • Mull over - to think carefully about something for a long time
  • Atmospherics - unusual conditions
  • Optics - the way a situation looks to the general public
  • Crown Prince - a prince who will become king after the present king or queen dies
  • Standalone - not connected to anything else, or not depending on anything else
  • Regarded as - to think of someone or something in a particular way
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Numerous - existing in large numbers
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Measure - an action that is intended to achieve or deal with something
  • Upgrade - to improve the quality of a service or product
  • Defence - actions that you take to protect someone or something that is being attacked
  • Maritime - involving ships or the business of moving people and goods in ships
  • Investment - the process of spending money in order to improve something or make it more successful
  • Joint venture - an agreement between two companies to work together on a particular job, usually in order to share any risk involved
  • Dampen  - to make feelings, especially of excitement or enjoyment, less strong
  • Condemnation - a public statement in which someone criticizes someone or something severely
  • Renounce - to state formally that you no longer believe in something or support something
  • Acknowledge - to accept or admit that something exists, is true, or is real
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Embrace - to put your arms around someone in order to show love or friendship
  • Unwarranted - not fair or necessary
  • Precede - to happen or exist before another person or thing
  • Overplay - to treat something as being more important or more serious than it really is
  • Isolating - to keep someone in a place away from other people
  • De-hyphenate - to deal with parties of the same issue, differently
  • Declaration - an official written statement that you sign to show that something is true
  • Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Compact - smaller than most things of the same kind
