International Current Affairs
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a main guest to the Eastern Economic Forum in September. 
    • The two leaders discussed key issues of bilateral agenda, resolved to increase cooperation in fighting international terrorism and solving other pressing world issues and also congratulated each other on the New Year.
  • India and Norway have agreed to collaborate closely on the ocean economy and achieve global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg's 3-day visit to India.
    • The two countries also decided to step up bilateral trade. 
    • The two countries also signed a MoU for holding an India-Norway Ocean Dialogue. 
  • The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, which makes minority immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who have entered India before December 31, 2014 eligible for Indian citizenship, has been passed in the Lok Sabha.
National Current Affairs
  • The Lok Sabha today cleared the constitution amendment bill to introduce a 10% reservation for poorer sections among general category aspirants for jobs and educational institutions. 
    • The bill was supported by 323 members while 3 members voted against it. 
    • Now the bill will be presented to the Rajya Sabha for debate.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E K Palaniswami today announced in the state Assembly the creation of the 33rd district named Kallakurichi.
    • This new district will be carved out by bifurcating Viluppuram
  • The Union Cabinet has approved Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for six communities in Assam, including the Moran and Matak communities. 
    • A bill in this regard will be introduced in the Parliament in the near future. 
  • A 5-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court will begin hearing on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land title dispute in Ayodhya case on January 10. 
    • The bench, headed by Ranjan Gogoi (Chief Justice of India), will comprise Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana, Justice Uday Lalit and Justice DY Chandrachud

  • On the occasion of his 78th birthday, veteran actor-producer Sanjay Khan announced his second book titled, ‘Assalamalaikum Watan’.
    • Sanjay Khan who has acted in almost 50 films, also produced and directed 'Chandi Sona', 'Kala Dhanda Goray Log' 'Abdullah' and the television classic 'The Sword of Tipu Sultan'. 
    • He is the recipient of the 'National Citizen Award' twice, the 'Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence' and the 'Gem of India Award for Excellence' among many other honours.
    • His first autobiography 'The Best Mistakes of My Life' was released in 2018.

  • World's richest person Jeff Bezos-led Amazon today surpassed software giant Microsoft to become the world's most valuable company
Recent Committees in News
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has formed a committee on "deepening of digital payments"
    • This committee will suggest measures to strengthen the security of digital payments and assess current levels of digital payments in financial inclusion, among others. 
    • The five-member panel will submit its report within 90 days from the date of its first meeting.
    • Head of this Committee : Nandan Nilekani (Co-founder, Infosys)
New Appointments
  • India's new ambassador to China Vikram Misri took charge of the post today. 
    • A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS)officer, Misri replaced Gautam Bambawale, who had retired in November. 
  • Former Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan has officially joined Facebook India as Vice President and Managing Director with immediate effect.
    • In his new role, Mohan HE be responsible for aligning teams and driving overall strategy. 
  • PayU India’s CEO Amrish Rau joined as the head of financial technology partnerships and investments for Naspers’ fintech business. 
    • Nasper is South African parent of PayU. 
  • The Congress today appointed transgender activist Apsara Reddy as a National General Secretary of its women's wing, the Mahila Congress.
    • With this, she became the 1st transgender office-bearer in the party
  • Indian Administrative Services Officer of 1985 batch, from Punjab Cadre, Chhabilendra Roul has assumed the charge of Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced that the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place entirely in India despite the upcoming general elections which are expected to take place in April-May. 
    • The detailed schedule will be out soon.
  • India Captain Virat Kohli has maintained his No. 1 position in the latest ICC batsmen rankings.
    • Cheteshwar Pujara has gained a spot to be 3rd, following his man of the series performance in India's maiden Cricket Test series win in Australia.
  • The 2nd edition of Khelo India Youth Games officially began in Pune, Maharashtra today. 
    • Sports Minister  Rajyavardhan Rathore and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the virtual torch ceremony at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in the evening. 
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the event through a video message.
    • More than 9,000 players from different states are participating in 18 different events.  
  • Egypt is going to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between 15th June and 13th July 2019.
