International Current Affairs
  • The 2nd India-Myanmar bilateral Army exercise 'IMBEX 2018-19' commenced at Chandimandir military station,  Haryana.
    • The exercise includes participation of 15 officers from Myanmar Army and 15 officers from Indian Army who shall jointly train for over a period of six days.
    • Aim of IMBEX 2018-19 : To train the Myanmar delegation for participation in UN peacekeeping operations. 
  • UK Members of Parliament today rejected a deal reached by Prime Minister Theresa May with the European Union on the terms of Britain's exit from the bloc (Brexit). 
    • May sustained the heaviest parliamentary defeat of any British Prime Minister in the democratic era after the deal was rejected by a majority of 230.
    • About the Brexit Deal :
      • The Brexit deal, rejected by the British Parliament, includes both the Withdrawal Agreement on the terms on which Britain leaves the European Union (EU) and a Political Declaration for the future relationship. 
      • The Withdrawal Agreement covers issues including citizens' rights, the Irish border and the Brexit divorce bill. 
      • Trade and security are the two main components of the Political Declaration.
National Current Affairs
  • The BJP-led Jharkhand government today announced implementation of 10% reservation in government jobs and education for the economically weaker sections in general category. 
    • Gujarat implemented the reservation on Monday and Himachal Pradesh announced to bring it into force soon. 
  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath today launched his government's ₹50,000 crore farm debt-waiver scheme titled 'Jai Kisan Rin Mukti Yojana'.
    • This scheme would benefit 55 lakh small and marginal farmers.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated 13-km-long, two-lane Kollam bypass on National Highway 66 in Kerala. 
    • With a project cost of ₹352 crore, the bypass will cut the travel time between Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram districts of the state. 
  • Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu today inaugurated the Global Aviation Summit 2019 in Mumbai.
    • The 2-day summit is being organised by Ministry of Civil Aviation in association with FICCI. 
    • It offers stakeholders an opportunity to explore, deliberate and understand how technology-driven innovations will change air travel in the decades to come.
    • Theme of Global Aviation Summit 2019 : 'Flying for all-especially the next 6 Billion'.
  • Bengaluru has emerged as the world’s most dynamic city according to JLL City Momentum Index 2019 which identifies World Dynamic Cities.
    • The Index measures short-term momentum over a three-year horizon and identifies urban economies and real estate markets which are currently undergoing significant rapid growth.
    • Hyderabad ranked 2nd, Delhi ranked 4th, Pune at 5th, Chennai at 7th and Kolkata at 15th position featuring in top 20 cities.
    • With 19 of the top 20 cities from Asia Pacific, the rankings highlight and showcase the region’s continued rapid urbanisation and strong economic growth.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Bank of China has offered a loan of $300 million to Sri Lanka, which could be raised to $1 billion.
    • The political crisis in Sri Lanka last year triggered by the ouster of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe adversely affected the country's economy. 
    • Note : Sri Lanka faces record high repayments of $5.9 billion this year.
  • The Centre today announced that it allocated an additional over ₹6,000 crore for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
    • This takes the total allocation to ₹61,084 crore in 2018-19, making it the highest ever in a financial year.

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has formed a 7-member Group of Ministers (GoM) under the GST regime and suggest remedial measures. 
    • It will analyse tax rate of GST and suggest a composition scheme for residential construction units.
    • Head of this Panel : Nitinbhai Patel (Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister)
    • Finance Ministers of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and the Panchayat Minister of Goa will be the members.

  • The Hindu Literary Prize 2018 Winners
    • English writer Neelum Saran Gour, author of Requiem in Raga Jankibagged The Hindu Prize 2018 for Fiction.
    • Activist Manoranjan Byapari, author of Interrogating my Chandal Life: An Autobiography of a Dalit, bagged The Hindu Prize 2018 for non-fiction.
    • The Hindu Young World-Goodbooks Award for Best Book Fiction to Venita Coelho for Boy No: 32.
    • A Brush with Indian Art of Mamta Nainy received The Hindu Young World-Goodbooks Award for Best Book Non-Fiction.
    • Vinayak Varma’s Angry Akku received The Hindu Young World-Goodbooks Award for Best Picture Book: Story.
    • Rajiv Eipe’s Ammachi’s Amazing Machines received The Hindu Young World-Goodbooks Award for Best Picture Book: Illustration.
New Appointments
  • Former CEO of Singapore Sports Hub & Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, Manu Sawhney has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of International Cricket Council (ICC)
    • He will join the organisation next month before formally taking over the reins from David Richardson in July following the ICC World Cup 2019.
  • Mohammed Ali Qamar, the man who won India's first Commonwealth Games gold medal in boxing, has been appointed as the chief coach for India's Female Boxers
    • Qamar (38) is also the youngest person to land the job. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Chennai's D Gukesh (12 years 7 months & 17 days) today became the 2nd youngest Grandmaster in the world and the youngest Indian to achieve the feat.
    • Important Note : Ukraine's Sergey Karjakin remains the youngest-ever Grand Master, achieving the feat in 2002 aged 12 years and seven months.
  • 36 year old Czech professional footballerr Petr Cech has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. 
    • He won 4 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League during his 11-year spell with Chelsea.
