National Current Affairs
  • Today (15th January) is 71st Indian Army Day.
    • It was on this day in 1949 when Lt. General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army post Independence.
      • This day inspires the troops to continue to enrich the glorious traditions of the Indian Army with their dedication and sacrifice.
    • This Day also marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and the people living in it.
    • Important Names to Remember :
      • Chief of Army Staff - Bipin Rawat
      • Chief of Naval Staff - Sunil Lanba
      • Air Chief Marshal - Birender Singh Dhanoa
    • Important Note : For the 1st time in the history of Indian Army, Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi will lead the Indian Army’s Service Corps (ASC) contingent and Captain Shikha Surabhi will be leading the Army’s Daredevils Motorcycle Display team comprising 33 men riding nine bikes in a pyramid formation.
  • Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) today announced that it will soon stop stamping of boarding passes by security personnel for domestic passengers. 
    • Passengers travelling within the country from Terminal 2 can authenticate their boarding pass at the pre-embarkation security checkpoints by scanning its barcode or QR code at the e-gates reader.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir State Administrative Council (SAC) under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik today approved the formation of 2 women police battalions
    • Over 2,000 posts of various ranks will be created for these battalions. 
    • The move is aimed at increasing female representation in the force and help tackle gender-based violence.
  • The mass Hindu pilgrimage, Kumbh Mela began today (15th January) on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. 
    • The 50 day mela will end on the occasion of Maha Shivratri (4th March).
    • To mark the beginning of the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, over 1.5 crore people took 'Shahi Snan' (royal dip) at Sangam, the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati
    • Important Note : Kumbh is the world's largest religious and cultural human congregation.
  • Himachal Pradesh will soon implement 10% reservation in government jobs and education for the economically weak section in the general category.
    • Note : Gujarat has became the 1st state to implement the 10% reservation.
  • To promote electoral awareness, the Election Commission of India (ECI) today announced the setting up of Voter Awareness Forums (VAF) in ministries, government departments, non-government departments and other institutions. 
    • The forums would generate awareness about the electoral process through activities like discussions and quizzes. 
  • Telangana government has been given the approval for its Rs. 13,384.80 crore Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project.
    • This project aims to divert Godavari river water to irrigate 2.72 lakh hectare in three districts.
    • The project, which is expected to be completed in three years, would lead to submergence of about 1,930 hectare area and 157 villages consisting of 9,696 families are likely to be affected.
Awards & Honors
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today received the 1st-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award in New Delhi. 
    • PM Modi was selected for this award for his "outstanding leadership for the nation". 
    • The award focuses on the triple-bottom-line of 'people, profit and planet'. 
  • Renowned writer Namita Gokhale was awarded Sushila Devi Literature Award for her work “Things to Leave Behind”. 
    • She was honoured in the ‘Best Book of Fiction Written by a Woman Author’ category at the inaugural edition of Bhopal Literature and Art Festival.
    • About Sushila Devi Literature Award :
      • This Award was constituted by Ratanlal Foundation
      • The award recognises the Best Book of Fiction Written by a woman author
      • This newly constituted award comes with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.
Science & Technology
  • China National Space Administration today announced that the cotton seeds taken by its Chang'e 4 mission have sprouted, marking the 1st time that biological matter has grown on the Moon
    • Note : The mission carried water and soil containing cotton and potato seeds, yeast and fruit fly eggs to develop a mini ecosystem. 
  • Pune authorities will soon introduce a pilot robot named ‘Roadeo’ which will function as a quasi-traffic policeman and caution commuters about traffic rules and offences.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In a bid to align with "the best corporate practices", the Finance Ministry has asked Public Sector Banks (PSB) to gradually reduce the government's equity to 52%
    • This reduction of government stake will help banks to meet 25 % public float norms of market regulator SEBI. 
    • Important Note : Some of the public sector banks have government’s holding beyond 75 %.
Deaths
  • Sir Michael Atiyah (89), a British mathematician who received the 1966 Fields Medal, also known as the 'Nobel for Mathematics,' passed away. 
    • He was best known for his co-development of a branch of mathematics called topological K-theory and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem
    • He has also worked as the President of the Royal Society from 1990-1995.
  • Veteran Congress leader and former chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Shivajirao Deshmukh (84) passed away.
    • He was first elected as MLA in 1978 and had served as Revenue Minister in the Vasantdada Patil government.
  • Former Ranji cricketer Rajesh Ghodge (43), who represented Goa in two first-class matches and eight List A matches, passed away.
New Appointments
  • Private lender ICICI Bank today appointed former State Bank of India (SBI) Managing Director (MD) B Sriram on its board as an Independent Director
    • ICICI Bank also appointed management consultant Rama Bijapurkar as an independent director on its board.
  • Senior Congress leader C P Joshi will be appointed as the Speaker of the 15th Rajasthan Assembly
    • Governor Kalyan Singh will administer the oath of office on 15th January. 
  • Advertising agency Mullen Lintas today appointed Vikas Mehta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 
    • He is going to replace Virat Tandon, who was recently elevated to the position of Group CEO. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian football team's head coach  Stephen Constantine resigned after India were knocked out of the AFC Asian Cup following a defeat by Bahrain today.
  • Wimbledon is going to honour 2-time Wimbledon champion and former world number one Andy Murray with a statue at the All England Club
    • Note : Earlier, the club had unveiled a statue of three-time Wimbledon champion Fred Perry in 1984.
