International Current Affairs
  • The 1st India-Central Asia Dialogue will be held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) during  12th & 13th January 2019. 
    • The Dialogue will be co-chaired by External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj and the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Kamilov.
    • The Foreign Ministers of Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan will participate in the event. 
    • The Foreign Minister of Afghanistan will participate in the dialogue as a special invitee for the session dedicated to connectivity issues in the region.
  • Nepalese External Affairs Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali today met his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi.
    • They reviewed recent developments in bilateral ties across diverse sectors, including in the areas of agriculture, railways and inland waterways as well as the pace of implementation of ongoing development and connectivity projects.
    • Both the leaders expressed satisfaction at the significant progress made in different sectors of cooperation as a result of intensified bilateral exchanges at all levels in recent months.
    • They reiterated their commitment to maintain the new momentum and to further strengthen the traditionally close and friendly ties between the two countries.
  • Guatemala today announced that it was pulling out of a United Nations-sponsored anti-corruption commission after more than a year of tension between the government and the group, which has investigated top government officials and people close to President Jimmy Morales.

National Current Affairs
  • Prime minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on 21st January 2019 at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
    • The 3 days long event will attract many eminent persons of Indian origin from the world over. 
    • The first day of the Divas will be dedicated to the youth. 
    • There will be seven sessions in the  Pravasi Bharatiya Divas programme.
  • After Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, Chhattisgarh has become the third state to withdraw the General Consent given to CBI to probe cases in the state. 
    • The general consent was withdrawn under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
    • The CBI must now seek permission before investigating any fresh cases in Chhattisgarh.
  • Aiming at reducing toxic particulate matter in 102 Indian cities by 2024, the Environment Ministry today launched National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)
    • The NCAP will be a mid-term, five-year plan with 2019 as the first year, while 2017 will be the base year for comparison of concentration. 
    • An amount of ₹300 crore has been sanctioned for this purpose.
  • The Cabinet today approved the establishment of 3 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)- two in Jammu and Kashmir (Vijayanagar, Awantipora) and one in Gujarat (Rajkot) under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme.
  • Alleging that the Centre is using the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the official communication of the flagship Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna to take credit for a jointly-funded project, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today announced that her government has decided to opt out the programme and to stop paying the state’s share.
    • States are supposed to bear 40% of the project cost, while the Centre will foot 60% of the bill.
MOUs & Agreements
  • An agreement for Renukaji Dam Multipurpose Project was signed in New Delhi today among the States of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand in the presence of  Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Nitin Gadkari.
    • Under the agreement, three storage projects are proposed to be constructed on the river Yamuna and two of its tributaries - Tons and Giri in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • State-run Bank of Baroda (BoB) has announced that it will double the minimum quarterly average balance limit for savings accounts in its metro and urban branches from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000
    • The minimum balance for semi-urban branches will be increased from ₹500 to ₹1,000 while there is no change for such accounts in rural branches. 
    • The changes will be effective February 1.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made changes with the Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS) to allow charitable institutions, central government entities and state government entities to deposit gold under GMS.
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today announced that the GST Council has raised the scope of composition scheme from ₹1 crore to ₹1.5 crore
    • A single annual return with quarterly tax payments has also been introduced under the scheme, he added.
    • Free accounting and billing software will be made available to small assessees up to ₹1.5 crore turnover, Jaitley further said.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today announced that it is well prepared to meet the targets of launching Gaganyaan manned mission to outer space by December 2021. 
    • Under Gaganyaan project, India is planning to send 3 astronauts to outer space for 7  days and bring them back. 
    • Other important missions to be launched by ISRO  :
      • A total of 332 launches are planned this year. 
      • GSAT-20 Satellite for high bandwidth connectivity to be launched in September-October. 
      • ISRO is also conceiving a mission to Venus by 2023. 
      • ISRO TV Channel will be launched by another 3-4 months. 
      • ISRO will also set up 6 incubation centres around India to help startups to begin new ventures.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Supreme Court has suggested setting up of a 3-member panel to suggest reforms for conducting of competitive examinations fairly by government bodies. 
    • This panel includes Nandan Nilekani (co-founder of Infosys), and Vijay P Bhatkar (renowned computer scientist).
    • The name of the 3rd member to be announced later. 
New Appointments
  • Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has appointed Su Tseng-chang as the new Prime Minister of the country.
    • Su is a former premier appointed in 2006 by then-President Chen Shui-bian and was a chairman of Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party for two terms.
  • Nicolás Maduro today sworn in as the President of Venezuela for a second term.
    •  Maduro was re-elected last year amid allegation of vote buying and electoral fraud. The US, EU and 13 other countries have said that they would not recognise Maduro's Presidency.
  • Additional Director M. Nageswara Rao today took charge of the office of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director.
    • Rao, a 1986-batch Odisha cadre Indian Police Service officer, took charge in pursuance of an order of the Department of Personnel and Training issued a day earlier. 
    • Rao has replaced Alok Verma who was transferred as Director General, fire services, a day after taking charge, due to corruption charges. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Mary Kom, who had become the 1st ever woman boxer to win 6 world championship titles in November last year, has been ranked No. 1 by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in the light fly (45-48kg) category. 
    • She tops her weight division with 1700 points. 
    • Note : Ukraine's 22-year-old boxer Hanna Okhota is ranked 2nd, with 1100 points.
  • President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Birendra Prasad Baishya, has been named Chef de Mission for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
    • Chef de Mission = the person in charge of a national team at an international sports event
    • Note : It is for the 1st time that the Weightlifting has been accorded with the honour of Chef de Mission for the Olympics.
