Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Current account woes"
  • Woes  - problems and worries
  • Reform  - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Boost - to help something to increase, improve, or become more successful
  • Export - the practice or business of selling goods to another country
  • Dependence - a situation in which you need someone or something in order to live or succeed
  • Import - to buy a product from another country and bring it to your country
  • Current account deficit - a measurement of a country’s trade where the value of the goods and services it imports exceeds the value of the goods and services it exports
  • Gross domestic product - the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year, except for income received from money invested in other countries
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Deficit - the difference between the amount of money or goods that a country or business has and the amount that it has spent or that it owes
  • Phenomenon - an event or situation that can be seen to happen or exist
  • Abate  - to gradually become less serious or extreme
  • Long-term - continuing to exist, be relevant, or have an effect for a long time in the future
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Volatility - liability to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse
  • Diversify - to develop new products or activities in addition to the ones that you already provide or do
  • Tap into - to get a substance from a particular place or object
  • Perennial - always existing, or never seeming to change
  • Per se - considered by itself: used for emphasizing that you are not considering something in relation to anything else
  • Brisk  - quick, energetic, and active
  • Liquidity - a situation in which a business has money or property that it can sell in order to pay money that it owes
  • Cause for concern - reason to worry
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Defend - to protect someone or something from attack
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Piecemeal - made or done in separate stages rather than being planned and done as a whole
  • Ill-advised - likely to have a bad effect
  • Obviously - in a way that is clear for almost anyone to see or understand
  • Kick the can down the road - to delay dealing with a serious problem in the hope that it will go away
  • Reliance - the state of depending on a particular person or thing

  • Life expectancy - the length of time that someone is likely to live
  • Morbid - relating to or caused by disease

  • Ambient - existing or present around you
  • Particulates  - extremely small particles of a substance or substances, especially those that cause air pollution
  • Notorious - famous for something bad
  • Household - the people who live in a house or flat when they are considered as a single unit
  • Accrue - if benefits and advantages accrue to you, you receive them
  • Stubble - the ends of plants that are left above ground after a farmer cuts a crop such as wheat or barley
  • Unbridled - free or uncontrolled in your emotions
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • Accountable - in a position where people have the right to criticize you or ask you why something happened
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Rapid - happening, moving, or acting quickly
  • Residue - the part of something that remains after the rest has gone or ended
  • Biomass - all the plant and animal life found in a particular area
  • Straw - the yellow stems of dried crops such as wheat, bales of straw
  • Underscore - to emphasize something, or to show that it is important
  • Potential - possible or likely in the future
  • Expenditure - money spent by a government, organization, or person
  • Affluent - rich enough to buy things for pleasure
  • Urban - relating to towns and cities, or happening there
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Emission - a substance, especially a gas, that goes into the air
  • Density - the amount of something in a place
  • Lacking - if something important or useful is lacking, it does not exist or is not available
  • Monitoring - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Imagery - pictures, photographs, or objects that represent an idea
  • Front-line - the most important or influential position in a debate or movement
