  • Extent - the size and importance of a problem or situation
  • Cyclone - a severe storm in which the wind spins in a circle
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Tsunami - a very large wave or series of waves caused when something such as an earthquake moves a large quantity of water in the sea
  • Devastation - damage or destruction affecting a large area or a lot of people
  • Heave a sigh - to let out a deep breath
  • Death toll - the number of people who are killed on a particular occasion
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Displacement - the situation in which people are forced to leave the place where they normally live
  • Enormous - very large in size or quantity
  • Distraught - extremely worried, upset, or confused
  • Contaminate - made dirty, polluted, or poisonous by the addition of a chemical, waste, or infection
  • Inaccessible - difficult or impossible to reach
  • Render - to make someone or something be or become something
  • Homeless - without a place to live
  • Cripple - to damage something severely, or to prevent it from working properly
  • Fertile - fertile land is able to produce good crops or plants
  • Felling - to cut down a tree
  • Livestock - animals such as cows, sheep, and pigs that are kept on farms
  • Hobbling - to prevent something developing or being successful
  • Yield - to produce something useful
  • Administrative - relating to the management of a company, organization, or institution
  • Undertake - to agree to be responsible for a job or a project and do it
  • Overnight - in a very short time
  • Assure - to tell someone that something will definitely happen or is definitely true, especially in order to remove doubt about it
  • Stricken - affected by serious problems such as injury or illness
  • Moratorium - an official agreement to stop an activity temporarily
  • Compensation - money that someone receives because something bad has happened to them
  • Invest - to use your money with the aim of making a profit from it

  • Relieve - happy and relaxed because something bad has not happened or because a bad situation has ended
  • Inflation - an economic process in which prices increase so that money becomes less valuable
  • Uncertainty - a nervous feeling that you have because you think bad things might happen
  • Break-even point - the point at which the total revenue of a business exactly matches the total costs, so that the business is making neither a profit or a loss
  • Capitalise - to sell something you own for money that you need
  • Preparedness - the state of being ready for something
