  • English word 'Toxic' has been chosen as the 'Word of the Year 2018' by Oxford Dictionaries
    • Meaning of Toxic - Poisonous
  • The 9th Annual Defence and Security Dialogue between India and China recently held in Beijing. 
    • India's defence delegation was headed by : Sanjay Mitra (Defence secretary)
National Current Affairs
  • Nearly 5 years after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the state has finalised its new emblem for official use. 
    • This emblem consists of "Dhamma Chakka (The Wheel of Law)" embllished with a ring of Triratnas alternating with pinnate leaves and precious stones.
    • Further, the national emblem is placed at the bottom of the Andhra emblem.
    • The state emblem was inspired by the Amaravati School of Art.

  • Union Ministry of Tourism has inaugurated 2 important projects as part of Development of North East Circuit under Swadesh Darshan Scheme in Arunachal Pradesh. They are :
    • Bhalukpong- Bomdila – Tawang Project
    • Nafra- Seppa- Pappu, Pasa, Pakke Valleys- Sangdupota- New Sagalee- Ziro- Yomcha Project
    • These projects were jointly inaugurated by the Union Minister of State (IC) Tourism, Shri K.J. Alphons; Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu and Minister for Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, Jarkar Gamlin.
  • The 2 day South Asian Regional Conference on Urban Infrastructure : New Approaches to Public and Private Partnerships (PPPs) and Municipal Finance Innovations was recently held in New Delhi. 
    • This conference was organized by NITI Aayog in partnership with United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB).
    • Objective : To discuss the key issues, perspectives and way forward in the Urban Infrastructure. 
Science & Technology
  • Elon Musk-led space exploration startup SpaceX has launched Qatar's Es’hail-2 telecommunications satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.
    • The satellite was deployed to a geostationary transfer orbit about 32 minutes after liftoff.
    • This is the startup's 18th launch of the year. 
  • Chinese Scientists today announced that their Nuclear fusion reactor (famously known as Artificial Sun) reached 100 million°C, the temperature required to carry out fusion on Earth. 
    • This record-high temperature is 6 times the temperature of Sun's core (15 million°C). 
    • Note : The reactor is designed to mimic processes occurring at the Sun to turn hydrogen into cost-effective clean energy.
  • Facebook Messenger has started rolling out its unsend feature.
    • This new feature lets users delete messages from chat within 10 minutes of sending. 
    • The feature, which will be released globally soon, has been released on Android and iOS in Poland, Bolivia, Colombia and Lithuania. 
  • Indian Navy has successfully completed refitted Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and was formally handed over. 
    • The ship was refitted in four-months as part of Indian Navy initiative undertaken in furtherance of its diplomatic outreach to friendly foreign navies in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Recent Committees in News
  • To ensure sustainable development of Indian Himalayan region, NITI Aayog has constituted Himalayan State Regional Council
    • The Council has been constituted to review and implement identified action points based on Reports of five Working Groups, which were established along thematic areas to prepare a roadmap for action.
    • It will be nodal agency for Sustainable development in Himalayan Region which consists of 12 States namely Jammu &Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur,  Mizoram, Tripura, two districts of Assam namely Dima Hasao and KarbiAnglong and Darjeeling and Kalimpong in West Bengal.
    • Head of this Council : Dr VK Saraswat (Member, NITI Aayog)
    • This council will also consists Chief Secretaries of Himalayan States as well as Secretaries of key Central Ministries, senior officers of NITI Aayog as well as special invitees.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • American payments processor Visa today announced that it is taking a minority stake in Indian payment gateway BillDesk.
    • Mumbai-based BillDesk processes digital payments worth over $60 billion a year and provides customers with payment options like cards and e-wallets.
  • Fitch Ratings today retained India's sovereign rating at the lowest investment grade of 'BBB-' with a stable outlook, same as that of Standard and Poor's
    • Fitch last upgraded India's rating from BB+ to BBB- with a stable outlook in 2006. 
    • Note : Fitch Ratings Inc. is one of the "Big Three credit rating agencies", the other two are Moody's and Standard & Poor's
New Appointments
  • India's second largest IT services firm Infosys today named Jayesh Sanghrajka as its interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
    • He has spent 13 years in Infosys over two stints and is currently working as Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Financial Officer. 
    • He is going to replace Ranganath who has stepped down yesterday.

  • The Pakistan Cricket Board is going to conduct a 3 match test series trophy titled 'Oye Hoye Cup 2018' between Pakistan and New Zealand.
    • This trophy was named after Pakistani potato chips brand Oye Hoye chips
