Hindu Editorial Topic 1 :  "The Sri Lanka crisis deepens"
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Deepen - if a bad situation deepens, it becomes worse
  • Dissolution -  the process of officially ending the existence of a group or organization
  • Negate - to make something have no effect
  • Letter and spirit - understanding the real intent and heart/spirit of what has been said or written
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Dissolve - if a group or organization dissolves, or if someone dissolves it, it stops existing
  • Evident - easy to see, notice, or understand
  • Majority - the number of votes by which a person or party wins an election
  • Desperation - the worry and anger that someone feels because they do not know how to deal with a bad situation
  • Controversial - a controversial subject, opinion, or decision is one that people disagree about or do not approve of
  • Dismissal - an act of making someone leave their job
  • Roil - to cause something to stop working in the usual or expected way
  • Uncertainty - a nervous feeling that you have because you think bad things might happen
  • Facilitate - to make it possible or easier for something to happen
  • Swearing-in - an official ceremony in which someone beginning an important job formally promises to do their duty
  • Legality - the fact that something is legal
  • Buy time - to do something in order to get more time to do or finish something else
  • Garner - to collect or obtain a large amount of something useful or important
  • Defection - to leave a country, political party, or organization and go to another one
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Continuance - the process of continuing
  • Untenable - impossible to continue because of serious problems, opposition, or criticism
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • Resolution - a formal proposal that is considered by an organization and is usually voted on at a meeting
  • Fig leaf - something that hides another thing that is considered morally wrong
  • Summon -  to arrange a formal meeting and tell people to come to it
  • Prorogue - to discontinue a session of something, for example parliament. To postpone or defer.
  • Enumerate - to name each one of a series or list of things
  • Override - to be much more important than something else
  • Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
  • Expressly - in a way that is clear and definite
  • Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Inclusive - deliberately aiming to involve all types of people
  • Camp - a group of people within a larger group who have the same ideas or support the same person
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • In the wake of something - happening after an event or as a result of it
  • Questionable - possibly not true, accurate, or complete
  • Sacking - an act of removing someone from a job
  • Crossroads - a point during the development of something when you have to make an important decision about what to do next
  • Crucial - something that is crucial is extremely important because it has a major effect on the result of something
  • Retreat - to avoid a dangerous, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation, especially by moving away from it
  • Authoritarianism - the belief that people with power should control what other people can do, or a situation in which this happens

  • Ripple - an emotion that spreads gradually through a person or a group of people
  • Discord - disagreement between people
  • Gravitational - relating to the force of gravity
  • Forthcoming - happening or coming soon
  • Illuminating - providing new or useful information, so that something becomes clearer and easier to understand
  • Merger - the process of combining two companies or organizations to form a bigger one
  • Black hole - an area in outer space where the force of gravity is so strong that light and everything else around it is pulled into it
  • Distant - far away from the place where you are
  • Pursuit - the process of trying to achieve something
  • Electrifying - extremely exciting
  • So-called - used for showing that you think a word used for describing someone or something is not suitable
  • Template - something that is used as a pattern or an example for something else
  • Conjunction - a combination of two or more things
  • Correlate - if two or more things correlate or are correlated, they are connected in a way that is not caused by chance
  • Weeding out  - to remove a person or thing that is not suitable or good enough, especially from a group or collection
  • Et al - used after a name to mean ‘and other people whose names are not mentioned’, especially people who have written a book together
  • Cryptic - expressing something in a mysterious or indirect way so that it is difficult to understand
  • Encompass - to include a lot of people or things
  • Lacuna - an empty space where something is missing
  • Collaborator - someone you work with in order to produce something
  • Transpire - to happen
  • Defence - actions that you take to protect someone or something that is being attacked
  • Put together - to produce or organize something using many different things
  • Leaps and bounds - used for saying that someone or something improves or increases a lot
  • Thoughtful - thinking seriously about something
  • Critique - a careful written examination of a subject that includes the writer’s opinions
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Beyond - outside a particular area
