  • Empowerment - the process of gaining freedom and power to do what you want or to control what happens to you
  • Advisory - an official announcement or warning
  • Refrain from - to stop yourself from doing something
  • Intrusive - becoming involved in something in a way that is not welcome
  • On the face of it - used for saying that something appears to be true but might not be true when you have examined it in more detail
  • In compliance with - the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • The bench - the position of being a judge in a court of law
  • The merits of something - the advantages something has compared to something else
  • Merely - just; only
  • Beyond - outside the range or limits of a subject, quality, or activity
  • Couched in something - to be expressed a particular way
  • Gratuitous - done or shown without any good reason
  • Debate - a discussion in which people or groups state different opinions about a subject
  • Appropriateness - the fact or quality of being suitable or right for a particular situation or purpose
  • Far from - used for saying that the real situation is the opposite of what you mention
  • Disfavour - disapproval
  • Unconstitutional - not allowed or not legal according to the constitution (=set of official rules or principles) of a particular country or organization
  • Arguably - used for stating your opinion or belief, especially when you think other people may disagree
  • Inexplicable - impossible to explain
  • Nomenclature - a system for naming things
  • Emotive - causing strong feelings
  • Evolve - to gradually change and develop over a period of time
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Solidarity - the support that people in a group give each other because they have the same opinions or aims
  • Oppression - unfair and cruel treatment by a powerful person or government
  • Untouchable - in some societies, someone who belongs to the lowest social class
  • Stigma - a strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair
  • In course of time - after some time has passed
  • Appellation - a name or title
  • Patronising - behaving or speaking in a way that shows you think you are more intelligent or important than someone
  • Sanctimonious - used for describing someone who tries to show that they have better moral or religious principles than other people
  • Downtrodden - treated in a cruel or unfair way by someone in a position of power
  • Pregnant - full of meaning or possibilities that have not yet happened or been expressed
  • Reassert - to say again that something is definitely true
  • Deny - to not allow someone to have something
  • String of - a group of similar or connected things
  • Abroad - in or to a foreign country
  • Ambition - something that you very much want to do, usually something that is difficult to achieve
  • Condemn - to criticize something or someone strongly
  • Arrive - to reach a place, after having been somewhere else
  • Mettle - the determination and ability to deal with problems and difficult situations
  • Upstage - to do something so that you get more attention and admiration than someone else
  • Host - a place or organization that arranges a special event and provides the area, buildings, equipment, or services needed for it
  • Let the side down - to work less hard or to make more mistakes than the people who you are working with
  • Ruthlessly - willing to make other people suffer so that you can achieve your aims
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • Deficiency - a fault in someone or something that makes them not good enough
  • Collectively - together, as a group
  • Survive - to continue to exist, especially in a difficult or dangerous situation
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Fixture - a sports event that happens at a regular time and place
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Principal - main
  • Tend to - to usually do a particular thing
  • On the back foot - in a worse situation than other people or groups
  • Exception - someone or something that is different in some way from other people or things and so cannot be included in a general statement
  • Dreadful - very unpleasant
  • Outstanding - extremely good or impressive
  • Accumulate - to get more and more of something over a period of time
  • Finest - of very good quality
  • Reliant - depending on someone or something
  • Successive - coming or happening one after another in a series
  • Injury - physical damage done to a person or a part of their body
  • Tinkering - to make small changes to something in order to improve or repair it
  • The likes of - a person, thing, or group similar in character or quality to the one mentioned
  • Omit - to fail to include someone or something, either deliberately or because you forget
  • Ideal - of the best or most suitable type
  • Perennially - in a way that lasts a very long time, or happens repeatedly or all the time
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Legacy - something that someone has achieved that continues to exist after they stop working or die
  • Squad - a sports team
  • Salvage your pride - to succeed in achieving something in a situation or action that has been a failure
