Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Banking on mergers"
  • Bank on someone/something - to depend on something happening or on someone doing something
  • Merger - the process of combining two companies or organizations to form a bigger one
  • Understandable - normal and reasonable in a particular situation
  • Shareholder - someone who owns shares in a company
  • Bad loan - a loan where repayments are not being made as originally agreed between the borrower and the lender, and which may never be repaid
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Amalgamate - to join two or more organizations, businesses etc and make a single large one
  • Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Overcome - to succeed in dealing with or controlling a problem
  • Shed - to lose something accidentally
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Framework - a set of principles, ideas etc that you use when you are forming your decisions and judgments
  • Gripped - to have a strong effect on someone / something
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Fallout - the unpleasant effects of something that has happened
  • Prudent - careful, and using good judgment
  • Synergy - the extra energy or effectiveness that people or businesses create when they combine their efforts
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • There is no denying - used for saying that something is clearly true
  • Ought to - have to
  • Precarious - likely to change or become dangerous without warning
  • Compulsion - a very strong feeling of wanting to do something, especially a feeling that you cannot control
  • Perspective - a way of thinking about something
  • Dictate - to influence or control how something is done

  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group

  • Ceres - a very small planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
  • Overcome - to succeed in dealing with or controlling a problem
  • Sentiment - feelings of sympathy, sadness, or love that may seem silly or too much

  • Massive - very large or heavy

  • Approximately - used for showing that an amount, number, time etc is not exact
  • Spherical - round like a ball

  • Deem -to consider that someone or something has a particular quality
  • On the other hand - used for giving two different opinions about something
  • Rationale - the set of reasons that something such as a plan or belief is based on
  • Journal - a magazine containing articles relating to a particular subject or profession
  • Classify - to decide which group someone or something belongs to, according to the particular features they have
  • Disprove - to prove that something is not correct or true
