International Current Affairs
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj led the Indian delegation at the 23rd meeting of India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission (IRIGC-TEC) 
    • This meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov.
  • Nepal today  flagged off a bus service between its capital Kathmandu and the Buddhist pilgrimage town of Bodhgaya (Bihar)
    • This came after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar flagged off the first bus service from Bihar to Nepal.  

National Current Affairs


  • Today (14th September) is Hindi Diwas (Hindi Day).

      • This day serves to propagate the Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values.
      • Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14 September because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India.
      • Hindi got its name from the Persian word Hind, meaning 'Land of the Indus River'.
      • Hindi is spoken as a native language by 258 million people and is recognized as the 2nd largest language in the world.
      • At the state level, Hindi is the official language of the following Indian states : 
        • Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. 
    • Tamil Nadu has issued an order banning the manufacture, sale (including online sale) and possession of e-cigarettes with immediate effect.  
    • The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has predicted that India’s unemployment rate in 2018 will stay at 3.5 per cent while China’s would edge up from 4.7 per cent to 4.8 per cent.
    • The 2 day Regional Conference on Good Governance with Focus on Aspirational Districts was held in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).
    Science & Technology
    • The UK Space Agency is going to send hundreds of microscopic worms to the International Space Station to study spaceflight-induced muscle loss. 
      • These worms are structurally similar to humans which could help determine muscle loss in space.
      • It could lead to better treatment for muscular conditions for people on Earth, UK science minister said.

    Awards & Honors
    • Rajalakshmi Nandakumar, an India-born woman scholar in the US, has been chosen for prestigious ‘Young Scholar’ award  for her work to help detect potentially life-threatening health issues using smartphones.

    Deaths
    • Bollywood writer Brij Katyal (85), who wrote the story of Shashi Kapoor starrer 'Jab Jab Phool Khile' passed away.
      • He had written the script of TV serial 'Saans' which was directed by Neena Gupta.

    New Appointments
    • President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval to appoint Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India
      • Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018, after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra.  
    • US bank Goldman Sachs has appointed Stephen Scherr as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
      • He will replace Martin Chavez, who will become the co-head of the trading division. 
      • Note : Goldman also named John Waldron as its next President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), the second most powerful position in the bank.
    • US President Donald Trump's administration has nominated Indian-American Bimal Patel to be the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Institutions
      • He is currently serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for the Financial Stability Oversight Council.  
    • Aegon Life Insurance today announced appointment of Ahmed Zackaria as the Chief Distribution Officer (CDO).
      • As a CDO, Zackaria will manage all the sales channels for the company.

    Sports Current Affairs
    • Man Kaur, a 102-year-old Chandigarh-based athlete, won the 200m race in the 100-104 age group category at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Spain. 
      • Kaur completed the race in 3 minutes and 14.65 seconds to bag Gold medal.
