International Current Affairs
  • 73rd anniversary of Hiroshima atomic bombing is being observed today.
    • More than 140,000 people were killed by the first of two uranium bombs, nicknamed Little Boy and Fat Man dropped on Japan at the end of the second world war.
    • Note : An American B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped Little Boy, on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
    • Japan surrendered days later on 15th August 1945 bringing the war to a close.
  • The joint military exercise MILEX-18 will be held at the Foreign Training Node at Aundh Military Station in Pune in September 2018.
    • The armies of all seven BIMSTEC countries (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand and Myanmar) will be participating in the exercise.
    • Aim of MILEX 18 : To create synergy, better understanding and evolve an institutionalized military forum for regional cooperation in the field of counterterrorism among member states.
  • The government of UK (United Kingdom) has announced new plans to change law for Organ and Tissue donation to address urgent need for organs within Indian-origin communities in the country. 
    • The amendment in existing law will propose new system of consent for organ and tissue donation. 
    • This will be known as Max’s Law after Max Johnson, a 10-year-old boy who was saved by a heart transplant.
National Current Affairs
  • Uttarakhand is going to become the 1st state to give identity cards to gau rakshaks (cow protectors)
    • The initiative is aimed at differentiating people who protect cows from those who resort to violence in the name of cow vigilantism. 
  • The government has recently announced that, at least 10,000 new jobs will be created with the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission, popularly known as Modicare
    • Around one lakh Ayushman Mitras will be deployed at both private and government hospitals under the scheme. 
    • Aim of this Scheme : To provide a cover of ₹5 lakh per family annually to 10 crore poor families.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • American multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation, PepsiCo today announced that it's first female CEO Indra Nooyi will step down after 12 years. 
    • Nooyi, who will remain as Chairman until early 2019, will step down on October 3. 
    • President Ramon Laguarta is going to replace her as the new CEO. 
  • The government is going to invite fresh bids for 100% stake sale in helicopter service provider Pawan Hans as ONGC has also approved the sale of its entire stake in the company.
    • Important Points to Note :
    • Pawan Hans maintains and operates a fleet of over 50 helicopters.
    • The government holds 51% stake in the company while state-run ONGC owns the remaining 49% shareholding.
  • Delhi has replaced Gujarat to top the State Investment Potential Index list of 21 states and Union Territories, prepared by economic think tank National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER)
    • Tamil Nadu moved up four spots to 2nd while Gujarat fell two spots to rank at 3rd.

Science & Technology
  • Computer scientists from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras have developed first of a family of six industry-standard microprocessors under Project Shakti
    • The initial batch of 300 chips have been named RISECREEK and have been fabricated at Intel’s facility at Oregon, US for free to run Linux operating system. 
    • Note : Project Shakti was started in 2014 as IIT-M initiative and part of it is funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • The launch of India's second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 has been delayed for the second time from October to January 2019
    • The mission's launch was first planned in April and was pushed to October. 
    • The delay in launch comes after ISRO faced two setbacks this year, losing communication with GSAT-6A satellite and failing PSLV-C39 mission.
  • Space agency NASA's Curiosity rover today completed it's 6th anniversary on Mars
    • Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, was designed to assess whether Mars ever had an environment able to support life forms.
  • The Union Ministry of Hume Resource Development (MHRD) has approved 122 new research project proposals worth Rs 112 crore for funding under its IMPRINT-II (Impacting Research Innovation and Technology) scheme
    • These projects were approved at IMPRINT-II Apex Committee meeting chaired by HRD Minister Prakash Javddekar in New Delhi.
    • The 122 approved new research projects aims to advance research in energy, healthcare, security and defence domains in the high education institutions. 
    • Note : IMPRINT, which was launched in November 2015 is 1st of its kind MHRD supported scheme to address major science and engineering challenges and boost original scientific and technological research in 10 technology identified domains in the country.
New Appointments
  • The nominating committee of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has selected Ajay Data as new council member of Country Code Supporting Organisation (ccNSO)
    • With this, he becomes the 1st Indian to get selected as a member of ccNSO, which is policy development body of ICANN for ccTLD (country code top-level domains) issues and represents all country code top level domain operators from around the world.
  • Senior JD(S) leader A H Vishwanath replaced Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy as the party's state president.
Deaths
  • Engineering company Escort Group's Chairman Rajan Nanda (76) passed away.
    • He was the husband of late superstar Raj Kapoor's daughter Ritu Nanda and the father-in-law of Amitabh Bachchan's daughter Shweta Bachchan-Nanda
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar won his 1st title on the European Tour in the form of the Fiji International championship, almost 12 years after turning a professional golfer. 
    • Bhullar, who was playing his 106th European Tour event in Fiji, also became the 5th  Indian golfer to win on the European Tour
