Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Numbing numbers: on draft NRC"
  • Numbing - so boring that you stop paying attention
  • Draft - something such as a plan, letter, or drawing that may have changes made to it before it is finished
  • Humane - showing kindness, care, and sympathy towards others, especially those who are suffering
  • Exclude - to prevent someone or something from taking part in an activity or entering a place
  • Spark - to make something happen, especially something involving violence or angry feelings
  • Anxiety - a worried feeling you have because you think something bad might happen
  • Mandate - an official order to do something
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Turbulence - a confusing or uncontrolled situation
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Lingering - lasting for a long time, especially when this is unpleasant or not necessary
  • Indeed - used for adding a statement that supports and increases the effect of what you have just said
  • Foolproof - a foolproof method, plan, or system is so well designed that it cannot go wrong or is certain to succeed
  • Warrant - to make an action seem reasonable or necessary
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Aplenty - more than enough
  • Frenetic - done very fast and with a lot of energy, often by someone who is in a hurry
  • Unrelenting - used for describing someone who continues to do something with a lot of determination
  • Apex - the top or most important
  • Omission - someone or something that has not been included, either deliberately or because someone forgot
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Gargantuan - extremely big
  • Bureaucracy - a complicated and annoying system of rules and processes
  • Adher to - to obey a rule, law, agreement etc
  • Devise - to invent a method of doing something
  • Digitise - to change pictures or other information into electronic signals
  • Mapping - the activity or process of creating a picture or diagram that represents something
  • Bias - an attitude that you have that makes you treat someone in a way that is unfair or different from the way you treat other people
  • Inherent - an inherent quality is a basic or essential feature that gives something its character
  • Flaw - a mistake or fault in something that makes it useless or less effective
  • Owe something to someone/something - to have something only because someone or something has helped you
  • Staggering - extremely surprising
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Exhausted - extremely tired and without enough energy to do anything else
  • Procedural - relating to a procedure, especially a legal one
  • Entirety - the whole of something
  • Eventuality - something that might happen, especially something bad that people might have to deal with
  • Assurance - a feeling or attitude of confidence
  • Panic - a sudden strong feeling of fear or worry that makes you unable to think clearly or calmly
  • Modality - the way in which something exists, is experienced or is done
  • Contestation - the act of arguing or disagreeing about something
  • Haul up - to force someone to go somewhere
  • Alien - someone who is not a citizen of the country / state they are living in
  • Determine - to control what something will be
  • Precise - exact and accurate
  • Deem - to consider that someone or something has a particular quality
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Grapple with - to fight with someone
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Left off - to stop doing something
  • Ascertain - to find out something
  • Detain - to keep someone in a police station or prison and not allow them to leave
  • Deport - to send someone out of a country, usually because they do not have a legal right to be there

  • Coastal - in the sea near to land
  • Stronghold - a place where people fighting an enemy can defend or organize themselves
  • Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Autonomous - an autonomous state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Resist - to oppose or fight against someone or something
  • Chunk - a large amount or part of something
  • Rebellion - an attempt to remove a government or leader by force
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Backer - someone who gives help or money to a plan or organization
  • Mediate - to try to end a disagreement between two people or groups
  • Militia - a group of ordinary people who are trained as soldiers to fight in an emergency
  • Offensive - a planned military attack
  • Autonomy - a situation in which a state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Feasible - possible or likely to succeed
  • Deploy - if a government or army deploys soldiers or weapons, it uses them
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Best-case scenario - the best or useful thing that could happen in a situation
  • Likewise - in the same way
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries

  • Stabilise - to reach a state where there are no longer any major changes or problems
