International Current Affairs
  • India and United States will hold their first-ever 2+2 dialogue in the first week of September, Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced. 
    • The talks will feature India's Ministers for External Affairs and Defence and the US Secretaries of State and Defence.
    • Note : The US had earlier postponed the talks as Secretary of State Michael Pompeo was due to travel to North Korea.
  • Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Sharif were arrested today at Lahore, after being convicted of corruption. 
    • Sharif and his daughter were sentenced to 10 and 7 years in jail respectively by an anti-corruption court last week over the purchase of London flats, uncovered by the Panama Papers leak.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today embarked on a two-day visit to Manama (Bahrain). 
    • During this visit, She will co-chair the second high joint commission meeting with her Bahraini counterpart Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.
    • She will also inaugurate the new Chancery building complex and address the Indian community. 
    • The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to identify new areas of cooperation between both countries.

National Current Affairs
  • Maharashtra Food Supplies Minister Ravindra Chavan announced that people will be allowed to carry food items along with them in cinema halls and multiplexes in the state. 
    • Chavan added action will be taken against the theatres' employees and owners if people are denied from carrying outside food as there cannot be a different price tag on food products at multiplexes.
  • The Health Ministry has clarified it's not mandatory for beneficiaries to submit Aadhaar details for seeking ₹5-lakh health insurance under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which is also known as 'Modicare'. 
    • This comes after media reports claimed that all applicants will have to submit their Aadhaar details or undergo Aadhaar authentication.
New Appointments
  • Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced that the Indian sprinter Hima Das will be named the state's sports ambassador after her 400m gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships. 
  • Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki has been given the additional charge as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh during the absence of incumbent Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Finance Ministry has conveyed to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that it has no objection to allowing the Tehran-based Bank Pasargad to open its branch in India.
    • The clearance to the Iranian bank comes amidst the US announcing sanctions and asking other countries to minimize oil purchases from Iran.
    • Note : Apart from the Iranian Bank, branch licence proposals of two South Korean banks, KEB Hana Bank and Kookmin Bank, have also been approved by the Centre.
  • India is going to buy the Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile despite US sanctions on military transactions with Russia, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced today. 
  • Turkey signed a deal to sell 30 T129 ATAK helicopters to Pakistan
    • The T129 ATAK Multirole Combat Helicopter has been optimised for specific hot and high performance requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces.
  • India’s Trade Deficit widened to its highest in over five years in June driven largely by a surge in oil imports.
    • It widened to $16.6 billion due to a rise in oil imports that surged 56.61% to $12.73 billion. 
    • Further, merchandise exports last month rose 17.57% to $27.7 billion from a year ago.
  • Australia has released a report on its Economic Strategy for India recommending that India should be put into its top three export markets and made the third largest destination in Asia for the country’s outward investment.
    • The report titled ‘An India Economic Strategy to 2035’ — authored by former Australian high commissioner to India Peter Varghese — was welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today.
  • The Japan International Cooperation Agency is going to invest around ₹72 crore in Bengaluru to install smart signals that will reduce the waiting time by 30%
Awards & Honors
  • India’s Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) project has won the World Bank’s internal award for exceptional performance in achieving many development goals. 
    • Note : The ICZM project is among the eight projects awarded, selected out of 42 final nominations received from the World Bank Task Teams in the South Asian Countries.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
    • This announcement came exactly 16 years after Kaif leading India to victory in the NatWest Series final. 
    • Note : Kaif represented India in 125 ODIs and 13 Tests.
