Global Peace Index 2018 : India ranks 137th

India moved up 4 places to rank 137th among 163 countries in recently released Global Peace Index 2018 (India's last year rank was 141st). A reduction in the level of violent crime driven by increased law enforcement is the reason for this improvement. India was also among the countries with the biggest decreases in the number of deaths, along with Sri Lanka, Chad, Colombia, and Uganda.

The Index ranked Iceland as the World's most peaceful country, a position it has held since the year 2008. Most peaceful regions in the world are Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and South America.

Syria, which has been facing a civil war since seven years, was found to the least peaceful country in the world. The Middle East and North Africa remained the least peaceful regions in the world.

The greatest increase in the number of deaths occurred in Syria, followed by Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen.
