  • Today (8th June) is World Oceans Day.
    • This day was officially recognized by the United Nations in late 2008.
    • Theme of World Oceans Day 2018 : "Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean".
  • Today is World Brain Tumor Day.
    • This day was initiated by German Brain Tumor Association in the year 2000.
  • India has moved up four places to the 137th rank among 163 countries on the 2018 Global Peace Index.
    • Iceland topped the index as World's most peaceful country.
    • Syria was found to the least peaceful.

  • 11th edition of Geo-Intelligence Asia 2018 was held at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.
    • The event was organised by GeoSpatial Media and Communication with Directorate General of Information System as Knowledge Partners and Military Survey as Co-organisers. 
    • Aim of 11th Geo-Intelligence Asia 2018 : To provide platform to showcase innovative applications of Geospatial technologies.
    • Theme of 11th Geo-Intelligence Asia 2018 : ‘GeoSpatial: A Force Multiplier for Defense and Internal Security’.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the 2-sided bust of Mahatma Gandhi, titled "Birth of Satyagraha" at the Pietermaritzburg railway station where 125 years ago Mahatma Gandhi decided to fight against injustice and colonialism.
  • Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sunayana successfully completed the Operation NISTAR, which was initiated to rescue 38 Indian Nationals from cyclone-hit Socotra island in Yemen under swift Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Operation (HADR). 
  • Rajinikanth starrer 'Kaala' became the 1st Indian film to release in Saudi Arabia, months after the kingdom opened a cinema for the first time in 35 years.
    • Note : 'Black Panther' was the 1st movie to be screened in Saudi Arabia in 35 years.
National Current Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has declared the Queen variety pineapple as state fruit of Tripura
    • Note : Tripura is one of the largest pineapple growing states in country. 
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has declared the state open-defecation free after achieving the goal of constructing 2.77 lakh individual toilets.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it will set up a Public Credit Registry (PCR) as a repository of information regarding loan information of individuals and corporate borrowers. 
    • Note : This decision has been taken as per recommendations of Y. M. Deosthalee committee.
  • The UK, France, Germany, and EU sent a joint request to the United States to exempt European companies from the sanctions imposed on Iran. 
    • Note : The US reimposed sanctions against individuals and entities conducting trade with Iran after it withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal.
  • The UK's Financial Conduct Authority has fined state-owned Canara Bank's UK division £896,100 (₹8 crore) for breaching anti-money laundering laws.
    • It has also prohibited the bank from accepting new deposits for nearly five months.
Science & Technology
  • Andhra Pradesh is set to become 1st state in India to use Auto-Disable Syringes for all clinical purposes to prevent infection. 
    • The state will enforce this decision from will from the World Hepatitis Day (28th July).
New Appointments
  • President Ram Nath Kovind gave West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi the additional charge of Tripura Governor till Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy is on leave. 
  • The former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), R Gandhi, has joined the board of Electronic Payment Services (EPS) as Independent Director.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Haryana government has issued a notification directing sportspersons employed with the state to pay 33% of their income earned professionally and through commercial endorsements to the state sports council. 
    • The money will be used for development of sports in Haryana.
  • India began their campaign at the 2018 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu, Japan, with a strong start , clinching four medals, including a gold.
    • Note : Ashish Jakhar won a gold medal in the men's hammer throw event. 
  • Playing in her 74th T20I, Indian cricketer Mithali Raj became the 1st-ever Indian woman cricketer to reach 2,000 runs in T20I cricket as India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the Women's Asia Cup today.

  • The Online Application Link for the IBPS RRB VII for the Common Recruitment Process for Regional Rural Banks, has  been activated today. You can apply online from today (8th June 2018) to 2nd July 2018 from the official website of the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (www.ibps.in).
