Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "For nutrition security: On undernourishment"
- Nutrition - food considered as something that keeps you healthy
- Undernourishment - not healthy because of not getting enough food
- Lacking - if something important or useful is lacking, it does not exist or is not available
- Tackle - to make an organized and determined attempt to deal with a problem
- Pointer - a piece of advice or information
- Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
- Agency - a government department, or an organization connected with a government, that deals with a particular subject
- Assessment - the process of making a judgment or forming an opinion, after considering something or someone carefully
- Absolute - very great or to the largest degree possible
- Endure - to suffer something difficult or unpleasant in a patient way over a long period
- Deprivation - a situation in which people do not have basic things that they need to live a comfortable life
- Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
- Extreme - very unusual
- Confound - to make someone feel surprised or confused, especially by not behaving in the way they expect
- Disparity - a difference between things
- Impact - an effect, or an influence
- Downturn - a reduction in economic or business activity
- Violent - involving the use of physical force, with the deliberate intention of causing damage to property or injury or death to people
- Owing to - because of something
- Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
- Scarce - if something is scarce, there is not very much of it
- Expensive - something that is expensive costs a lot of money
- Setback - a problem that delays or that stops progress or makes a situation worse
- Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
- In spite of something - used for referring to a fact that makes something else surprising
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Anaemic - suffering from a medical condition in which your blood contains too few red blood cells
- Woefully - used for emphasizing that something is very bad or does not happen enough
- Imperative - extremely important and urgent
- Ill-conceived - an ill-conceived idea or plan is not sensible
- Deficiency - a lack of something that your body needs
- Evaluate - to think carefully about something before making a judgment about its value, importance, or quality
- Dietary - related to the foods that someone eats
- Subsidise - to pay some of the cost of goods or services so that they can be sold to other people at a lower price
- Rations - amounts of food that are provided for people who do not have enough or for people such as soldiers
- Household - the people who live in a house or flat when they are considered as a single unit
- Poverty line - the amount of money considered necessary to live
- Cereal - a food made from grain, for example wheat, oats, or corn, mainly eaten with milk for breakfast
- Affluent - rich enough to buy things for pleasure
- Complement - to add another thing to something
- Sketchy - not detailed or complete
- Impact - an effect, or an influence
- Crude oil - oil that is still in its natural state and has not yet been refined for use by chemical processes
- Dwarf - if one thing dwarfs another, it makes it seem small by comparison:
- Export - to send a product to another country so that it can be sold there
- Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
- Cartel - a group of people or companies who all agree to sell something at the same price so that they can all make profits without competing with one another
- Barrel - a unit for measuring crude oil
- Strive - to make a lot of effort to achieve something
- Unsurprisingly - in a way that you expected
- Intent - the intention to do something
- Benchmark - an amount, level, standard etc that you can use for judging how good or bad other things are
- Glut - an available amount of something that is more than people want or need
- Overshoot - to spend more money than you should on something
- Outage - a period when a service, such as electricity, is not available
- Steep - a steep increase or fall in something is sudden and very big
- For instance - for example
- Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
- Loom over - to appear as a large shape that is not clear, usually in a threatening way
- Stakeholder - a person or company that has invested in a business and owns part of it
- Save face - to avoid seeming stupid or feeling embarrassed
- De facto - actual, even though not official
- Vocal - someone who is vocal expresses their opinion frequently and strongly
- Exert - to use influence, authority, or power in order to affect or achieve something
- Consumer - someone who buys and uses goods and services
- Ramp up - to increase something such as a rate or level, especially the rate at which goods are produced
- Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
- Politicking - political activity by someone who is only interested in doing things for their own advantage, not in helping other people
