International Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd June) is International Olympic Day.
    • This day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris.
    • The goal of this day is to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.    
  • Today (23rd June) is the World Public Service Day.
    • This day is dedicated by the United Nations to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community”.
    • Since 2003, this day is marked with UN Public Service Awards Ceremony wherein works of public servants are recognised and they are awarded for their contributions in the field.
  • Today (23rd June) is International Widows Day.
    • This day is a United Nations ratified day of action to address the "poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries".
    • This day was established by The Loomba Foundation to raise awareness of the issue of widowhood.
    • The significance of 23 June is that it was on that day in 1954 that Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, mother of the foundation's founder, Lord Loomba, became a widow.
  • China is going to build a railway line connecting the Tibetan city of Xigaze with Nepal's capital Kathmandu.
    • An agreement to build the network was signed between the two countries during Nepalese PM KP Sharma Oli's recent visit to China. 
  • North and South Korea agreed to resume reunions for families separated by the Korean War in August - the first such meetings since 2015 and the latest step in a remarkable diplomatic thaw on the peninsula.
    • Millions of people were separated during the 1950-53 conflict that sealed the division of the two Koreas.
National Current Affairs
  • The ban on plastic came into effect from today across the state of Maharashtra.  
    • The state has banned the sale, use and manufacture of plastic bags, as well as disposable products made of plastic and thermocol
    • The items excluded from the ban are plastic used in the packaging of medicines, drugs, and milk as well as bags used for horticulture and agriculture purposes. 
    • The fine for the first-time and second-time offence will be ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 respectively, while a third violation would attract ₹25,000-fine and three-month jail. 
    • The state government also made it compulsory for the Public Works Department to use plastic waste for construction and repair of asphalt roads
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Vanijya Bhawan at Delhi's Akbar road. 
    • Once ready, the new building will house the Department of Commerce. T
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified that the use of or access to Aadhaar biometric data for criminal investigation is not permissible under Aadhaar Act.
    • The UIDAI said, the biometrics data collected by the authority can be used only for the purpose of generating Aadhaar and for authentication of identity of Aadhaar holders and cannot be used for any other purpose.
  • The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has adopted Jagatpur village (Delhi) for its Swachhata Abhiyaan.
    • The sanitation drive by KVIC began with a plantation drive and ended with cleanliness drive along the bank of the Yamuna river.
New Appointments
  • Retired IPS officer K Vijay Kumar has been appointed as an Advisor to the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir
    • IAS officer BVR Subrahmanyam has been appointed the Chief Secretary of the state.
Science & Technology Current Affairs
  • University of Michigan has regained the title of making the world's smallest 'computer' from IBM by making a device measuring 0.3mm x 0.3mm, one-tenth of IBM's version. 
    • Smaller than a grain of rice, the device loses all prior data when unplugged, unlike desktop computers. 
    • The device is a precision temperature sensor, which can report temperatures with an error of 0.1ÂșC.
  • With an aim to promote energy efficiency, Power Minister RK Singh has asked major air-conditioner manufacturers to maintain default temperature setting at 24 degree Celsius
    • Note : Some countries like Japan have regulated the temperature at 28 degree.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has signed two Memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with Cuba
    • First MoU is on Bio Technology and the Second one is on Traditional Systems of Medicine.
Awards & Honors
  • Arunachal Pradesh bagged the 'SKOCH Order-of Merit' Award for the Measles-Rubella Vaccination campaign and also for the Chief Minister's Free Cancer Chemotherapy Scheme being implemented in the state. 
    • The award was conferred to the state at the 52nd SKOCH Summit, which was recently held in New Delhi. 
    • Note : Skoch Group is a think-tank dealing with socio-economic issues with a focus on inclusive growth since 1997.
  • American director, producer, screenwriter, actor and film historian Martin Scorsese will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Festival 2018.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has become the only domestic brand to be featured in the BrandZ's top 100 most valuable global brands ranking at the 60th slot with a brand valuation of USD 20.8 billion.
    • BrandZ is an offering from Millward Brown, which is a WPP Group company, the world's largest communications agency.
    • The list is topped by Google.

Sports Current Affairs
  • A 11-year-old Indian girl, Nathania John K, led the Brazilian and Costa Rican teams on to the field at the FIFA World Cup today.
    • With this, Nathania became the 1st Indian girl to be an Official Match Ball Carrier (OMBC) at the World Cup
  • India defeated Pakistan 36-20 in their first match of the inaugural 6-nation Kabaddi Masters at the Al-Wasl Sports Complex in Dubai today. 
    • Now India is scheduled to play with Kenya in next match.
