  • Today (20th June 2018) is World Refugee Day.
    • This day is observed by the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
    • This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
    • The decision to observe the day, coinciding with Africa Refugee Day, was made by the UN in December 2000.
    • The first World Refugee Day marked the 50th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention.
    • Theme of World Refugee Day 2018 : “Now More Than Ever, We Need to Stand with Refugees”
  • The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is going to host the 7th OPEC International Seminar at the Imperial Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. 
    • Theme of 7th OPEC International Seminar 2018 : ‘Petroleum – cooperation for a sustainable future’.
  • The Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, the health intelligence wing of the directorate general of health services in the Union ministry of health and family welfare, has recently released the National Health Profile 2018.
    • Maldives spends 9.4% of its GDP to claim the top spot in the list, followed by Thailand (2.9%).
    • Low-income nations like Bhutan and Nepal spend 2.5% and 1.1% of its GDP respectively on public health, which is more than India's 1%, according to this report. 
  • Canada's upper house of parliament today voted in favour of a bill to legalise recreational marijuana.
    • With this, Canada becomes the first G7 nation to legalise cannabis. 
  • The United States today withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) citing anti-Israel bias. 
    • The US was elected to the Council for the first time in 2009 after boycotting it for three years.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is on a 2 day visit to China.
    • Note : Kim's visit to China comes a week after he met US President Donald Trump in a historic summit in Singapore. 
National Current Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today approved the imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect. 
    • This comes after the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti resigned as the Chief Minister.
  • The Haryana government has decided to introduce an environment-centric scheme, under which school children will be given ₹50 for planting trees every six months for a period of three years. 
    • The scheme will cover students from Classes 6 to 12 of both government and private schools. It will be launched on July 10.

  • A 19 year old Tamil Nadu college student, Anukreethy Vas, has been crowned Miss India 2018 at the 55th Femina Miss India 2018.
    • Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar, who won the title last year, crowned Anukreethy, who will go on to represent India at Miss World.
    • Haryana's Meenakshi Chaudhary stood second while Andhra Pradesh's Shreya Rao Kamavarapu ranked third
  • Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos becomes the Richest Man in the World with a net worth of USD 141.9 billion according to the Forbes world’s billionaire list.
    • Bezos' wealth has grown more than $5 billion since June 1 to beat Bill Gates, the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation, who is the second-richest man in the world with $92.9 billion.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Pune Police today arrested the MD & CEO of Bank of Maharashtra, Ravindra Marathe along with executive director R K Gupta in the ₹3,000 crore DSK Group loan fraud case. 
  • Arvind Subramanian has announced that he is going to step down as the Chief Economic Advisor. 
    • Note :  Subramanian's extended term as the Chief Economic Advisor ends in October this year.
Books & Authors
  • Actress Priyanka Chopra is writing a memoir, titled "Unfinished", which will be published simultaneously in India, the US and Britain next year. 
    • This book is a collection of personal essays, stories, and observations by the Actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
New Appointments
  • Former Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), R Gandhi, has joined digital payments major Paytm as an Advisor. 
    • As an advisor, he will be advising on payment systems, regulations, compliance and corporate governance, Paytm said.
  • US-based cab aggregator Uber has appointed Pradeep Parameswaran as the company's President for India and South Asia business.
    • He will replace Amit Jain, who has been elevated to the role of Head of Asia Pacific region including Australia, and New Zealand. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • 18 years after achieving statehood, Indian state Uttarakhand is going to debut in Ranji cricket this season. 
    • Note : Till now, Uttarakhand players used to play for other states as it had no BCCI-affiliated association.
