International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived Qingdao (China) today on a two-day visit.
    • During this visit, he will attend the annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
    • Several pressing global issues including future of Iran nuclear deal, the impact of US sanctions on Russia and situation in the Indo-Pacific region, will be discussed in the summit. 
    • Besides Modi, other leaders attending the summit include Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain.
    • Important Points Note
    • PM Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to attend the summit after India became a full member in 2017 along with Pakistan.
    • The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an intergovernmental international organisation which came into force in 2003. 
    • The SCO currently has 8 member countries (India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) which represents around 42 per cent of the world’s population and 20 per cent of the global GDP.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted PM Narendra Modi's invitation for an informal summit in India next year.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived in Singapore today for his historic summit with US President Donald Trump, which is scheduled to be held on 12th June 2018. 
    • Note : The trip to Singapore represents the farthest Kim has traveled from North Korea since taking power after his father's death in 2011.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today elected South Africa, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Germany and Belgium as non-permanent members of the Security Council. 
    • Their terms will begin on January 1 next year, with the non-permanent members being elected for a two-year term. 
    • The Security Council is composed of 15 members, five permanent and 10 non-permanent.
National Current Affairs
  • Maharashtra has been ranked the most vulnerable state in the draft National Disaster Risk Index.
    • Maharashtra was followed by West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh
  • The Bihar government is planning to ban Khaini (chewing tobacco), on health grounds. 
    • The state has written to the Centre to notify khaini as a food product in order to ban it.
Deaths
  • English Actress Eunice Gayson (60), the first to be officially considered a 'Bond girl', has passed away.
    • Eunice portrayed the character Sylvia Trench in the 1962 film 'Dr. No', the maiden film for the spy character James Bond, and the second film 'From Russia with Love'. 
  • Renowned chef, food critic and writer Anthony Bourdain (61) has died of a suspected suicide. 
    • Bourdain is best known for his CNN series “Parts Unknown”.
    • He became popular with his best-selling book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly”, which was an expose on the world of haute cuisine.

  • A 22-year-old Sikh soldier Guardsman Charanpreet Singh Lall today created history by becoming the 1st to wear a turban instead of a bearskin hat during the Trooping the Colour parade (an annual parade that marks the birthday of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II).
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and China today signed 2 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs). They are,
    • MOU on provision of hydrological information of the Brahmaputra river in flood season by China to India.
    • MOU for exporting rice from India to China, one of the world’s biggest rice markets. 
Awards & Honors
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping today awarded China's 1st Friendship Medal to Russian President Vladimir Putin
    • The medal is China's highest state honour for foreigners and is presented to those who made outstanding contributions to China's modernisation drive.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Romanian professional tennis player, Simona Halep has won French Open 2018 in women's singles category by defeating USA's Sloane Stephen. 
    • This is her maiden Grand Slam title.
  • Bangladesh has won the 2018 Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup by defeating India in the finals at Kuala Lumpur today.   
    • This was the second time Bangladesh defeated India in this edition of Asia Cup. 
    • Note : India's Harmanpreet Kaur has been named as the Player of the Series.
