International Current Affairs
  • As many as 14 Indian cities are among the 20 most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM2.5 levels, according to World Health Organisation's latest report on air quality
    • According to this data, India's Kanpur is the most polluted city in the world.
    • Top 5 in the List :

      • Faridabad
      • Varanasi
      • Gaya
      • Patna
  • The militaries of India and China have agreed to set up a hotline between their headquarters after an informal summit between Indian PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. 
    • This hotline would enable the militaries to intensify communication in order to avoid confrontations like the 73-day Doklam standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron have agreed on the need to preserve the Iran nuclear deal. "
    • Note : In an earlier statement with US President Donald Trump, Macron called for a new Iranian nuclear deal.
National Current Affairs
  • Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's 97th birth anniversary is being observed today.
    • Ray is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
  • The government today announced that the Aadhaar is not mandatory for getting a SIM and that a phone number can be issued using alternative identification cards such as voter ID or Driving Licence
  • South Western Command of Indian Army is conducting ‘Vijay Prahar’ exercise in Mahajan area close to Suratgarh in Rajasthan. 
    • Over 20,000 troops are participating in this exercise.
    • The month-long exercise is aimed to orchestrate wide spectrum of threats which are planned to be tackled through high tempo joint air and land operation.
    • This exercise involves hundreds of aircrafts, thousands of tanks and artillery pieces supported by real time intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and logistic support.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind is going to preside over the 1st meeting of National Committee for Commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019. 
    • The committee is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has 114 members on board including Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, former Prime Ministers and Chief Justice of India, Lok Sabha Speaker, members of union cabinet, political party leaders, chief ministers, Gandhians, spiritual gurus and social workers among others.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Breaking decades-old tradition, the State Bank of India (SBI) has decided not to hold its annual accounts meet in Kolkata from this year. 
    • Note : Though SBI is headquartered in Mumbai, its central accounts office continues to be in Kolkata. 
  • Venezuela has offered India a 30% discount on crude oil purchases made using the oil-backed Venezuelan cryptocurrency Petro
    • Note : The US had banned transactions involving Petro, saying it intended to bypass US sanctions.
  • The 9th India Japan Energy Dialogue was held in New Delhi. 
    • India and Japan issued Joint Statement at conclusion of the meeting, agreeing to work together for energy security, energy access and climate change issues.
    • Note : This meeting was chaired by Minister of State (MoS) for Power and New & Renewable Energy R.K Singh along with Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Hiroshige Sekosigned.
Deaths
  • Noted marxist economist and former West Bengal Finance Minister Ashok Mitra (90) passed away.
    • Mitra also worked as India's Chief Economic Adviser and was a member of Rajya Sabha.
New Appointments
  • Former chief secretary of Karnataka, Subhash Chandra Khuntia has been appointed as the new Chairman of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI)
    • He has replaced TS Vijayan whose five-year term ended in February 2018.  
    • About IRDAI :
    • IRDAI is an apex statutory body that regulates and develops insurance industry in India. 
    • It was constituted as per provisions of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999. 
    • IRDAI is a 10-member body including the chairman, five full-time and four part-time members appointed by the government of India.
    • Headquarters of IRDAI : Hyderabad.
  • 1983 batch IIS officer Sitanshu Ranjan Kar took over as 27th Principal Spokesperson of govt and Director General of Press Information Bureau (PIB) in New Delhi.
    • He has replaced Frank Noronha, who superannuated on Apr 30. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon announced that it is increasing the total prize amount for 2018's edition to $46.57 million (approximately ₹300 crore), a 7.6% increase from last year. 
  • England overtakes India for the top spot in the ICC ODI team ranking following the annual update. 
    • England have gained eight points and now have 125 points.
    • India stood at second spot with 122 points followed by South Africa (113 points).
