Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The Nipah test"
  • Infection - a disease or other medical condition that is caused by bacteria or by a virus or a parasite
  • Outbreak - the sudden start of war, disease, violence etc
  • Emergency - an unexpected situation involving danger in which immediate action is necessary
  • Pathogen - something such as bacteria or a virus that causes disease
  • Trigger -  to make something happen
  • Lethal - very dangerous and able to kill you
  • Ribonucleic acid - an important chemical present in all living cells
  • Exceptional - much more or greater than usual
  • Mutation - a change in the genes of a plant or animal that causes it to become different from others of its type
  • Adapt - to change something to make it more suitable for a new use or situation
  • Efficiently - in a way that shows the ability to work well and quickly and in an organized way
  • Microbe - a very small living thing that you can see only with a microscope
  • Infect - to make someone get a disease, that can be spread from one person to another
  • Symptom - a sign that someone has an illness
  • Encephalitis - a very serious disease affecting your brain that is caused by an infection
  • Inflammation - an area on your body that is swollen, red, and painful because of an infection or injury
  • Coma - a state in which someone is unconscious for a long time because they have been seriously injured or are extremely ill
  • Disorientation -  to make someone confused about where they are or what direction they are moving in
  • Long-lasting - continuing for a long time
  • Convulsion - violent movements of a person’s body that they cannot control
  • Survive - to stay alive despite an injury, illness, war etc
  • Stuttering - to move, work, or progress in a way that is not smooth or regular
  • Transmission - a process by which a disease spreads from one person to another
  • Fruit bat - a bat that eats fruit and lives in tropical regions
  • Reservoir - a large supply of something
  • Caregiver - someone who looks after a person who is ill or unable to look after themselves
  • Secrete - to produce a liquid such as saliva
  • Fatality - a death caused by an accident, war, violence, or disease
  • Subcontinent - a large area of land that forms part of a continent, especially the part of Asia that contains the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh
  • Acquire - to get something
  • Palm - a palm tree
  • Contaminated - made dirty, polluted, or poisonous by the addition of a chemical, waste, or infection
  • Droppings - the faeces (=solid waste) of animals or birds
  • Preliminary - coming before the main or most important part of something
  • Contagious - a contagious disease spreads from one person to another through touch or through the air
  • Combat - an attempt to stop something bad or to solve a difficult problem
  • Efficiency - the ability to work well and produce good results by using the available time, money, supplies etc in the most effective way
  • Diagnostic - used for finding out what physical or mental problem someone has
  • Commend - to praise someone or something formally or publicly
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Precaution - something done to protect people or things against possible harm or trouble
  • Regimen - a programme of medical treatment, exercise, or special food for improving your health or appearance
  • Master - to learn something thoroughly so that you know it or can do it very well
  • Preventable - capable of being prevented

  • Dissent - strong disagreement, especially with what people in authority think or with what the majority of people think
  • Rolling back - to remove something, or to reduce the influence of something
  • Confrontational - behaving in a way that shows you want to have an argument or fight with someone
