  • International Workers' Day, also called Labour Day or May Day, is being observed today.
    • This day is celebrated on May 1st every year to commemorate the struggles of working people throughout the world. 
    • May Day originated in late 19th century when labour movement to gain the 8-hour work day began.
    • Theme of International Labour Day 2018 : “Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement”.
  • Today (first Tuesday of May) is World Asthma Day.
    • World Asthma Day is observed to raise the awareness about this chronic respiratory disease, which is majorly prevalent in children these days.
    • Theme of World Asthma Day 2018 : "Never too early, never too late. It's always the right time to address airways disease"
  • The 1st ever bilateral joint military training exercise between India and Malaysia titled HARIMAU SHAKTI 2018 began in dense forests of Sengai Perdik, Hulu Langat, Malaysia. 
    • Aim of Harimau Shakti 2018 : Bolstering cooperation and coordination between armed forces of India and Malaysia.  
  • American animated sitcom  'The Simpsons' has become the longest-running scripted TV show ever in the US after airing its 636th episode. 
    • The show won several awards, including 32 'Emmy Awards' and a 'People's Choice Award'.  
    • The show first aired on 17th December 1989.

  • Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Uma Bharti, today launched the Gobardhan Scheme from Haryana's Karnal district.
    • Aim of Gobardhan Scheme : To positively contribute to cleanliness and generate energy from solid waste.
    • The scheme focuses on managing and converting cattle dung and solid waste from farms and fields to useful compost, biogas and bio-CNG. 
  • The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were divided and given statehood under the Bombay Reorganisation Act on this day (1st May) in the year 1960.

  • To monitor government decisions and propose suggestions for better governance, Kerala's first shadow cabinet took oath today. 
    • The 17-member cabinet is made up of civilians and has a woman Chief Minister.  
    • Shadow Cabinet : a group of members of the principal political party in opposition that are chosen as counterparts of members of the government who hold cabinet positions.
  • The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in holy city if Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) from January 21 to January 23, 2019. 
    • Theme of 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas : “Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India”.  
    • Note : The 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas was held in Bengaluru (Karnataka) with theme “Redefining Engagement with the Indian Diaspora”.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Russia has launched the world's only floating nuclear power unit into the Baltic Sea. 
    • The 70-megawatt vessel left its shipyard from St Petersburg towards the Arctic via a Russian town to load nuclear fuel. 
  • Telecom Commission today approved a proposal for allowing phone calls and Internet service in flights within Indian airspace
    • The government will not intervene in the pricing mechanism, which would be left to airlines and in-flight connectivity providers.
  • UNICEF Australia has launched 'The HopePage', which allows users to make a donation by mining cryptocurrency Monero using the visitor's computer processing power. 
  • Under the new Consumer Protection Bill introduced by the government, E-commerce websites selling consumer goods will be held liable for false claims. 
    • The bill, which is yet to be passed, provides for the establishment of Central Consumer Protection Authority to prevent unfair trade practices. 
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is going to launch its 1st-ever mission InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) to study the deep interior of Mars on May 5, 2018. 
    • It will be launched from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California aboard United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket. 
  • Pakistan is going to launch a space programme next year to reduce dependency on foreign satellites for civil and military purposes and to keep an eye on India.
    • The budget for the country's space agency Suparco for the year 2018-19 is expected to be Pakistani Rs 4.70 billion. 
    • Pakistan will also planning to establish space centres in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.
  • British and American scientists have launched a 5-year mission to assess the risk of the Thwaites glacier collapsing, already responsible for a 4% sea-level rise.
    • The $27.5-million project is among "the most extensive examinations of an Antarctic glacier ever undertaken".

  • Citizen scientists have named a new species of beetle 'Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi' after Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio for his environmental activism. 
    • The first known specimen of the 3-mm-long beetle, which lacked a left antenna, was found in the South Asian island of Borneo.
  • The recently released Malayalam film 'Sudani from Nigeria' will be screened at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival on 14th May 2018. 
New Appointments
  • UK Prime Minister Theresa May today appointed Sajid Javid as the new Home Secretary
    • He has replaced Amber Rudd, who resigned from the post for misleading a government committee about deportation quotas for Caribbean migrants who arrived in the UK after World War II.
  • India's leading mattress brand Centuary Mattresses has appointed Sania Mirza as its brand ambassador.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian shooter Shahzar Rizvi became the world number one shooter in the 10-metre air pistol category after having won a silver medal at the recently concluded shooting World Cup in South Korea. 
  • Cricket Australia has hired ethics experts to investigate the culture of the national men's team after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. 
  • Hockey India has named women's hockey coach Harendra Singh as Indian men's team head coach while incumbent men's team coach Sjoerd Marijne returned as the women's team coach
