Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "SC/ST Act verdict: The violent aftermath"
  • Verdict -  an official judgment made in a court
  • Aftermath - the effects and results of something bad or important
  • Re-examine - to look at or think about something carefully again
  • Atmosphere - the mood or feeling that exists in a place and affects the people who are there
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Ruling - an official decision, especially one by a judge, a court, or other authority
  • Safeguard - to protect something or someone from being harmed or having problems
  • Atrocity - a cruel and violent act, often in a war
  • Tragic - causing or involving great sadness, because someone suffers or dies
  • Caught unawares - to surprise someone, often making them feel confused or embarrassed
  • Scale - the size of something, especially when it is big
  • Intensity - strength
  • Dispel - to get rid of unpleasant feelings or false beliefs
  • Lay down - to state officially what someone must do or how they must do it
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Convey - to communicate ideas or feelings indirectly
  • Marginalise - to prevent someone from having power or influence
  • Oppressed - suffering from unfair and cruel treatment by a more powerful person or government
  • Unpalatable - unpleasant to think about or accept
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Large-scale - involving a large number of people or things, or happening over a large area
  • Preliminary - coming before a more important action or event
  • Accused - the person who is on trial in a law court
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular plac
  • Moot question - a moot point, question, or issue is one that people disagree about
  • Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
  • Vulnerable - someone who is vulnerable is weak or easy to hurt physically or mentally
  • Decline - to say politely that you will not accept something or do something
  • Disparate - disparate things belong to very different groups or classes
  • Harassment - annoying or unpleasant behaviour towards someone that takes place regularly
  • Dignity - respect that other people have for you or that you have for yourself
  • Oppressed - suffering from unfair and cruel treatment by a more powerful person or government
  • Sacrifice - to give up something important or valuable so that you or other people can do or have something else
  • Discontent - the unhappy feeling that you have when you are not satisfied with something
  • Pragmatic - involving or emphasizing practical results rather than theories and ideas
  • Conducive - creating a situation that helps something to happen
  • Unleash - to do or to cause something that has a very powerful or harmful effect

  • Apart from - in addition to someone or something
  • Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
  • Troops - soldiers, especially in large numbers
  • Blockade - an official action that is intended to prevent people or goods from moving from one place to another
  • Miserable - extremely unhappy or uncomfortable
  • Exaggeration - a comment or description that makes something seem better, worse, larger, more important etc than it really is
  • Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Mounting - increasing, especially in a way that makes a situation worse
  • Status quo - the present situation, or the way that things usually are
  • Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event

  • Trigger - to make something happen
  • Protester - someone who publicly shows their opposition to something such as a law or policy
  • Ascertain - to find out something
  • Impartial - not connected to or influenced by one particular person or group
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Probing - trying to find out the truth about something
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
  • Accountable - in a position where people have the right to criticize you or ask you why something happened
  • Censure - severe criticism of someone
  • Outbreak - the sudden start of war, disease, violence etc
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Faction - a small group within a larger group, consisting of people with different opinions from the rest
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Mitigate - to reduce the harmful effects of something
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Mediterranean - relating to the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea, the people who live there, or their culture
  • Enclave - an area of a country or city where a particular group of people live
  • Probe - an attempt to find out the truth about an issue, problem, or accident, made by an official group or by a newspaper, television programme etc
