Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "War for war: On U.S. strikes on Syria"
  • Escalate - to increase, especially at a fast rate that causes problems
  • Conflict - fighting between countries or groups
  • Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
  • Devastating - causing a lot of harm or damage
  • Province - an area that is governed as part of a country or an empire
  • Cruise missile - a nuclear missile that is controlled by a computer and can travel very long distances
  • Airbase - a military airport
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Gutted - extremely disappointed
  • Ally - a country that makes an agreement with another country that they will work together to help each other, especially in a war
  • Undertook - to agree to be responsible for a job or a project and do it
  • Prohibition - a law or rule that stops people from doing something
  • Ascertain - to find out something
  • Inter-governmental - involving governments of different countries
  • Watchdog - a person or organization that works to stop people from doing illegal things in a particular area of business or society
  • Requisite - necessary for a particular purpose
  • Evidence - facts or physical signs that help to prove something
  • Merely - just; only
  • Flout - to deliberately refuse to obey a rule or custom
  • Mission accomplished - used for saying that someone has successfully done what they wanted to do or had to do
  • Bravado - a brave and confident way of behaving, especially when you do not really feel like this
  • Provocation - something that causes you to react in an angry or violent way, often something that is intended to cause such a reaction
  • Perceive - to notice or realize something
  • Deter - to make someone decide not to do something
  • On the other hand - used for giving two different opinions about something
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Worrying - causing you to feel worried
  • Confrontation - a situation in which people or groups are arguing angrily or are fighting
  • Heightens - becomes stronger
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Preside over - to be in a position of power while important changes or events are happening
  • Monstrous - cruel, unfair, or morally wrong
  • Brute force - great physical force or strength
  • Ground reality - reality of the situation
  • Misery - the state of being extremely unhappy or uncomfortable
  • Last thing - the least expected or wanted thing
  • Unilateral - done or decided by one country, group, or person, often without considering what other countries etc think or want
  • Aggressive - behaving in an angry or rude way that shows you want to fight, attack, or argue with someone
  • Multilateral - involving three or more groups, especially the governments of three or more countries
  • Diplomacy - the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Long-lasting - continuing for a long time
  • Mandate - to give official permission for something to happen

  • Diverse - very different from each other
  • Allure - a special, exciting, and attractive quality that someone or something has

  • Unflattering - making someone seem unpleasant or not attractive
  • Vestige - a very small sign of something that has almost disappeared or stopped existing
  • Colonial - relating to a system or period in which one country rules another
  • There’s no denying - used for saying that something is clearly true
  • Relevance - the quality of being directly connected with and important to something else
  • Stepping stone - an event or experience that helps you achieve something else
  • Glory - admiration and praise that you get because you have done something impressive
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Frontrunner - the person or thing considered the most likely to win a competition, game, election etc
  • Underline - to show clearly that something is important or true
  • Fortnight - a period of two weeks
  • World-class - one of the best in the world
  • Javelin - a long pointed stick that is thrown in a sports competition
  • Splendid - very impressive, or very good
  • Clinch  - to manage to win or achieve something by doing one final thing that makes it certain
  • Anticipate - to think that something will probably happen
  • Emergence - the process of appearing or becoming recognized
  • High point - the best, most exciting, or most important part of something
  • Arena - a large area that is surrounded by seats, used for sports or entertainment
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
  • Take a beating - to be damaged because of performing badly or being criticized
  • Pack off - to send someone away somewhere suddenly
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Aberration - a short time when someone behaves in a very strange or careless way
  • Unaddressed - not considered or dealt with
  • Tally - a record of the number of things that someone has done, won, or achieved
  • Optimistic - hoping or believing that good things will happen in the future
  • Defend - to attempt to win a competition that you won last time in order to keep your position as winner
