International Current Affairs
  • World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day is being observed today.
    • This day is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
    • The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995.
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Athens chosen as the World Book Capital 2018.
      • Sharjah named World Book Capital for the year 2019.
  • Today (23rd April) is UN English Language Day.
    • The event was established by the UNESCO in 2010.
    • April 23 was chosen as the date for the English language because it is the birth  anniversary of greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist William Shakespeare.
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and will hold informal talks during 27th and 28th April 2018 in China's Wuhan. 
    • Aim of this meeting : To improve relations and scale down tensions following the 73-day military standoff at Doklam. 
  • The Toronto District School Board has unanimously adopted a motion recognising November as 'Hindu Heritage Month' in the city. 
    • The board, which is the third-largest in North America, covers 583 schools. 
National Current Affairs
  • A group of 50 alumni from the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country have quit their jobs to form a political party titled Bahujan Azad Party  to fight for the rights of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
    • The group first aims to contest 2020 Bihar Assembly elections and then 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
  • The Madras High Court became 1st court in south India and overall eighth in the country to introduce e-court fee payment facility
    • It was jointly launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Chief Justice Indira Banerjee.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Indian IT firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has joined the world's 100 most valued companies and now ranks 97th, according to Bloomberg data. 
    • TCS has became the second Indian company to reach the $100-billion market capitalisation milestone.
    • Note : The 1st Indian company to cross the $100 billion milestone was Reliance Industries in 2007.
  • Beijing-based China Construction Bank has opened the country's 1st unmanned bank equipped with robots and machine holograms to talk to customers. 
    • The bank uses facial recognition technology for identification while a robot greets customers at entrance to answer questions. 
  • The world's debt reached a record $164 trillion in 2016, which is worth 225% of the world's Gross Domestic Product, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). 
    • Note : China alone contributed more than 40% to the increase in global debt since 2007.

  • Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has become the 1st Egyptian player to be named Professional Footballers' Association player of the year
New Appointments
  • Tata Sons today appointed former Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar as the group's Global Corporate Affairs President
  • Sitaram Yechury was unanimously elected as the General Secretary of CPI(M) for his second term. 
    • Yechury had taken over as General Secretary from Prakash Karat in the 21st Party Congress in 2015.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Spain's Rafael Nadal has won 11th Monte Carlo Masters title by defeating Japan's Kei Nishikori.
    • With this, the world number one Nadal has became 1st male tennis player in the Open Era to win the same title 11 times in his career.
