International Current Affairs
  • Today (18th April) is International Day for Monuments and Sites.
    • This day also commonly known as World Heritage Day.
    • This day was established by UNESCO in the year 1983.
    • The main aim of this day is to  to raise public awareness about the diversity and vulnerability of the world’s built monuments and heritage sites and the efforts required to protect and conserve them.
    • Theme of World Heritage Day 2018 : “Heritage for Generations”.
  • India has won 6 elections to United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) bodies, five of them unanimously.
    • In the polls held today, India won places on the executive boards of four UN bodies, three commissions and a committee.
    • They are :
    • Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Committee
    • Commission on Population and Development
    • Commission for Social Development
    • Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice
    • Council to the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
    • United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)
National Current Affairs
  • The 1st meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan was held in New Delhi. 
    • It saw participation of NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar, CEO Amitabh Kant and representatives of various ministries of Central and State Governments.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has released draft of National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) proposing multiple strategies to reduce air pollution. 
    • Aim of NCAP : To tackle increasing air pollution problem across country in comprehensive manner.
  • With a view to achieve total digitisation of postal operations in the country, under the IT Modernisation Plan, Department of Posts has launched DIGITAL ADVANCEMENT OF RURAL POST OFFICE FOR A NEW INDIA (DARPAN) Project.
    • Aim of DARPAN : To connect all 1.29 lakh Rural Branch Post Offices in the country and to enable them to do online Postal and Financial Transactions.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The UIDAI has told the Supreme Court that it has imposed a penalty on Airtel and Axis Bank for breaching terms attached to Aadhaar authentication. 
  • Amid reports of cash shortage in certain states, the government has decided to increase the printing of ₹500 notes by five times
  • Social media giant Facebook has started testing Digital Payments in India in a beta version of its Messenger app. 
    • Users will be able to recharge mobile phones and other prepaid services including DTH and broadband amongst others.
    • The service is expected to offer peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant payments and will compete with WhatsApp UPI.
  • In its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected India is expected to grow at 7.4% in 2018 and 7.8% in 2019. 
    • The IMF is held that India will again emerge as world’s fastest-growing major economy at least for the next two years (2019 and 2020).

  • Former US First Lady Barbara Bush (92) passed away.
    • Wife of 41st US President George HW Bush, Barbara had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart problems in recent years.
Science & Technology
  • Amazon has launched an Android web browser app titled Internet which is designed to use minimal storage and data.
    • The app supports private tabs that don't save browser history and shows cricket news and general headlines on its homepage.
Books & Authors
  • Former FBI Director James Comey is going to release a book titled 'A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership'.
    • Note : Comey has made controversial revelations regarding his interactions with the US President Donald Trump in the book.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has become the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) overtaking Suresh Raina.
