International Current Affairs
  • Today (17th April) is World Hemophilia Day.
    • This day aims at raising awareness about haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.  
    • Haemophilia  - a ​rare ​blood ​disease in which ​blood ​continues to ​flow after a ​cut or other ​injury because one of the ​substances which ​causes it to ​clot does not ​work ​correctly.
    • Theme of World Hemophilia Day 2018 : ‘Sharing Knowledge Makes Us Stronger’.
  • The India-Wiesbaden Conference 2018 was concluded today at New Delhi. 
    • The conference was hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs in cooperation with the Government of Germany and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA).
    • The Theme of the Conference is : ‘Securing Global Supply Chains through Government-Industry Partnerships towards Effective Implementation of UNSC Resolution 1540’.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Sweden for a two-day visit.
    • Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven broke the protocol and received Indian PM at the airport.
    • During this visit, Modi is scheduled to address a gathering of select Swedish business leaders.
    • Important Note : Modi's visit to the nation is the first by an Indian Prime Minister since former PM Rajiv Gandhi's 1988 visit.
  • Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has invited the Taliban to contest the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections amid attempts to end the over 16-year-long war with the militant group. 
  • China has launched a website for citizens to report names of people who attempt to bribe government or military officials as part of its crackdown on corruption. 
    • The informants would be rewarded by the government.
National Current Affairs
  • The Qutub Minar in Delhi was lit up with red lights today to mark World Haemophilia Day.
  • To address outstanding water resources issues, the 1st regional conference of eastern states on Water Resources was held in Kolkata, West Bengal.  
    • The conference focused on finding solution to mitigate intra and intra-basin issues relating to water resources in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2018.  
    • The amended Rules lay down that the phasing out of Multilayered Plastic (MLP) is now applicable to MLP, which are “non-recyclable, or non-energy recoverable, or with no alternate use.”
    • The amended Rules also prescribe a central registration system for the registration of the producer/importer/brand owner. 
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and its French counterpart Centre National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) are going to collaborate on missions to Mars and Venus.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • A parliamentary panel has summoned RBI Governor Urjit Patel to appear before it on May 17 to answer queries on the recently-unearthed banking scams. 
    • Patel had earlier said that the RBI doesn't have adequate powers to deal with public sector banks.
  • Ministry of Commerce and Industry has launched FIEO GlobalLinker, a digital platform for MSME exporters to digitise their businesses and join global community of growing businesses.
    • FIEO GlobalLinker aims to make the business growth of SMEs simpler, more profitable and enjoyable.  
    • FIEO - Federation of Indian Export Organisations 
  • The Centre is working on a system to deduct the road toll amount directly from bank accounts so that drivers don't have to stop at toll plazas, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced today. 
    • Important Points to Note
    • This system already exists in South Korea.
    • Indian government will sign an agreement with South Korean President to develop the same system in India.
  • WhatsApp has released a feature for its Android beta users which allows them to 'Request Money' from other users on the platform. 
    • Users can access the feature in the 'Payments' option in 'Settings', currently in its testing phase. 
    • The request is valid for 23 hours and is limited to payments initiated by QR Code or UPI ID.
  • The Indian Government along with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched 1st tranche of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) for current fiscal (FY 2018-19). 
    • It will be sold through banks, designated post offices and recognised stock exchanges namely NSE and BSE and Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL).
New Appointments
  • Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase today announced that it has acquired Earn.com, which lets users send and receive digital currency for replying to e-mails and completing tasks. 
    • As part of the $100 million deal, Earn's CEO Balaji Srinivasan will become Coinbase's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
MOUs & Agreements
  • Indian Army has signed Memorandum of Undertaking (MoU) with Axis Bank on Defence Salary Package. 
    • The first MoU between Axis Bank and Indian Army was signed in 2011 and was renewed in March 2015.  
    • The current MoU is tailor-made to suit e requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families.
  • The Indian Government has signed Loan Agreement with World Bank for IBRD loan of US $48 million for Meghalaya Community – Led Landscapes Management Project (MCLLMP) 
    • Aim of MCLLMP : To strengthen community-led landscapes management in selected landscapes in Meghalaya by 2023.
Deaths
  • Veteran journalist and editor S Nihal Singh (88), who won the International Editor of the Year Award for his role in opposing the Emergency by former PM Indira Gandhi, passed away today. 
    • When censorship was imposed during the Emergency period, Singh as The Statesman's Editor published, "This issue of The Statesman appears under censorship" on the front page.
Awards & Honors
  • The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine jointly won Pulitzer Prize for their revelations of sexual harassment and abuse in Hollywood
    • The New York Times also won Pulitzers in the national reporting and editorial cartooning category
    • Other Pulitzer winners included Reuters, which won the 2018 prize in international reporting and feature photography categories.
  • Kendrick Lamar became the 1st rapper to win a Pulitzer Prize for music as he won the prestigious prize for his album 'DAMN'.
