International Current Affairs
- Today (10th April) is World Homoeopathy Day.
- Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that uses small, highly diluted doses of natural substances to trigger the bodies own healing abilities.
- Homeopathy Day is observed every year to pay tribute to Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, founder and father of Homeopathy System of Medicine.
- Note : World Homeopathy Awareness Week is celebrated annually between April 10th and April 16th.
National Current Affairs
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off India's first all-electric high-speed locomotive in Bihar.
- The first big Make-in-India project completed by France's Alstom, the train has the country's most powerful engine with 12,000 horsepower and a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.
- To address rising incidence of Vitamin D deficiencies (VDD), particularly amongst the young people, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched a new project titled ‘Project Dhoop’.
- Aim of Project Dhoop : To encourage schools to shift their morning assembly to around noon-time, mainly between 11 am to 1 pm to ensure maximum absorption of Vitamin D in students through natural sunlight.
- The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has brought in secured Digitally-signed QR Code on e-Aadhaar.
- It will contain photograph of Aadhaar holder in addition to demographic details.
- The 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and Pacific Region was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
- This forum was co-organized by Ministry of Housing and Affairs, Japan’s Environment Ministry, and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD).
Awards & Honors
- Bollywood Actor Ranveer Singh is going to be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award 2018 in the Best Actor category for his work in 'Padmaavat'.
- Actress Anushka Sharma will also be awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for her contribution to films as a Producer.
- The Saudi Film Council has announced that it will participate in the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival from May 8 to 19.
- Note : Saudi Arabia recently announced the opening of its first cinema in 35 years.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced the launch of its UK subsidiary, SBI (UK) Limited, with an initial capital commitment of 225 million pounds from its parent entity.
- With this, SBI becomes the first foreign bank in the UK to ringfence its retail division from its wholesale business.
- Axis Bank CEO and MD Shikha Sharma has sought approval from the bank's board to step down at the end of 2018.
- Note : In December last year, the bank had decided to reappoint Sharma for a fourth 3-year term starting June 2018.
- American multinational technology company Apple has announced its global facilities are now powered by 100% clean energy, including data centers, offices and retail stores in 43 countries.
- Singapore Airlines has been named the Best airline in the world in the 2018 Travellers' Choice Awards by TripAdvisor.
- Air New Zealand stood at 2nd spot followed by Emirates.
New Appointments
- Bharti Enterprises Vice-Chairman Rakesh Bharti Mittal assumed office of the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2018-19.
- He replaced Shobana Kamineni, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd.
- Uday Kotak, Founder and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank took over as President-Designate of CII.
- Vikram Kirloskar became the new Vice-President of CII.
- Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was elected as Chairman of Boao Forum (also known as known as “Asian Davos”) for Asia replacing Japan’s Yasuo Fukuda.
- Former governor of People’s Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan was appointed vice-chairman.
- Labour Secretary M Sathiyavathy took charge as Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
MOUs & Agreements
- Singapore and China have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote greater collaboration between companies from both countries in third-party markets along China’s ambitious Belt and Road routes.
- The MoU will see the formation of a working group between Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Enterprise.
Sports Current Affairs
- India's badminton ace Kidambi Srikanth is all set to become World No.1 on Thursday, replacing Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.
- Srikanth will be the first Indian male player to achieve this feat and will join Saina Nehwal, who became the first Indian girl to become world No. 1. In March 2015.
- Indian shooter Heena Sidhu set Commonwealth Games record to win Gold in women's 25m pistol shooting event today.
- This was Sidhu's second medal at CWG 2018, after winning silver in women's 10m air pistol.
- India clinched their 1st-ever Badminton mixed team event Gold in Commonwealth Games history after defeating defending champions Malaysia 3-1 in the final today.
- Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth represented India in singles' matches of the five-member team event.
- India defeated Nigeria 3-0 to clinch Gold in the Men's table tennis team event at the Commonwealth Games for the first time since 2006.
