  • Violence - actions or words that are intended to hurt people
  • Decisive - able to make choices or decide what to do quickly and confidently
  • Impartial - not connected to or influenced by one particular person or group
  • Put down - to use force to stop a protest
  • Spurt - a sudden increase in something
  • Racial - relating to someone’s race
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Disquiet - a feeling of being very worried or nervous
  • Warrant - a reason for doing something
  • Imposition - the introduction of something such as a new law or a new system
  • State of emergency - a temporary system of rules to deal with an extremely dangerous or difficult situation
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular place
  • Precarious - likely to change or become dangerous without warning
  • Invoke - to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Apparatus - the people and organizations involved in some aspect of government
  • Escalate - to become much worse or more serious, or to make something do this
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Deploy - if a government or army deploys soldiers or weapons, it uses them
  • Strife - fighting or disagreement between people or groups
  • Reverberation - an effect that spreads over a wide area or lasts for a long time
  • Ignite - to make something start to burn
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Road rage - violent behaviour by a driver towards another driver
  • Hardline - strict or extreme in your beliefs or opinions, and not willing to change them
  • Wade in - to become involved in someone else’s discussion, argument, or fight in a confident way that may not be very welcome
  • Inflammatory - likely to make people feel angry
  • Incendiary - likely to cause anger or violence
  • Constituent - someone who lives in a constituency and is allowed to vote in elections
  • Protracted - continuing for a long time, especially longer than is normal or necessary
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Massacre - the action of killing of a lot of people
  • Displacement - the process of taking the place of someone or something
  • Mobilisation - to organize or prepare something, such as a group of people, for a purpose
  • Integral part of something - forming an essential part of something and needed to make it complete
  • Mainstream - considered ordinary or normal and accepted or used by most people
  • Presumably - used for saying that you think something is true based on what you know, although you are not really certain
  • Attribute - to believe that something is the result of a particular situation, event, or person’s actions
  • Majoritarian - governed by or believing in decision by a majority
  • Hate-monger - someone who tries to provoke hatred and prejudice, especially against minority groups
  • Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event
  • Triumphalism - the attitude or behaviour of someone who shows they are very proud of their own victory or success
  • Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
  • Relapse - to return to your previous character or behaviour
  • Impunity - freedom from any risk of being punished for doing something wrong or bad
  • Prevail - to exist at a particular time or in a particular situation
  • Hardliner - strict or extreme in your beliefs or opinions, and not willing to change them
  • Intimidation - to deliberately make someone feel frightened, especially so that they will do what you want
  • Redouble - to try even harder than before to do something
  • On the ground - the place being discussed, especially a place where there is a war or another serious situation
  • Decisiveness - the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively
  • Impartiality - equal treatment of all rivals or disputants; fairness

  • Evaluate - to think carefully about something before making a judgment about its value, importance, or quality
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Safeguard - to protect something or someone from being harmed or having problems
  • Anti-dumping - relating to laws that are intended to prevent imported goods from being sold for less than they cost to produce
  • Import - a product from another country, that is bought with money from your country
  • Photovoltaic - able to produce electricity from light, or relating to the process of doing this
  • Apprehensive - slightly worried or nervous
  • Diminish - to become less
  • Attuned - familiar with something and able to deal with it in a sensitive way
  • Augment - to increase the size, amount, or value of something
  • Acquisition - the process of getting something
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • Incentive - something that makes you want to do something or to work harder, because you know that you will benefit by doing this
  • Enormous - very large in size or quantity
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates
  • Forward-looking - looking at the future in a positive way and happy to try new ideas and methods
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Strive to do something - to make a lot of effort to achieve something
  • Large scale - involving a large number of people or things, or happening over a large area
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
