International Current Affairs
  • India ranked 62nd in the Inclusive Development Index released by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
    • China stood at 26th position and Pakistan is at 47th position in this Index. 
    • This index takes into account the "living standards, environmental sustainability, and protection of future generations from further indebtedness".
    • Norway remains the world's most inclusive advanced economy, while Lithuania topped the list of emerging economies.
  • Prime Minister Narendar Modi is on a visit to Davos to attend the World Economic Forums Annual Meeting 2018.
    • This is his mainden visit to the meeting and he is the only Indian PM to attend the event after former PM HD Deve Gowda(in 1997).
    • In the meeting, he will spread the word about India's progress and seek investment on the lines of India's 'Make in India' agenda.
  • Valletta, the capital of Malta, was officially named European Capital of Culture 2018
    • Valletta will share the title with Leeuwarden, a city in the Netherlands. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Raipur Municipal Corporation in Chhattisgarh organised the three-day Kachra Mahotsav 2018.
    • This is India's first Garbage Festival
    • Aim of this festival : To increase awareness, use the waste generated in the city creatively, and to showcase multiple techniques for reusing things that are labelled as garbage.
  • Delhi Police Special Cell today arrested Abdul Subhan Qureshi, the 2008 Gujarat serial blasts mastermind
  • The Maharashtra government has approved a Rs 4,000-crore project aimed at promoting climate-resilient agriculture, to be partially funded by the World Bank.
    • It will roll out in 2018-19 and continue till 2023-24.
  • Nirmala Sitharaman became the first full-time Defence Minister to fly in a Sukhoi 30 MKI of the Indian Air Force.
    • Note : The Sukoi-30 MKI is a nuclear-capable aircraft which can penetrate deep into enemy territory.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Technology giant Apple has partnered with Malala Fund to support girls' education, thereby becoming its first Laureate partner. 
    • The Fund plans to extend the funding programs to India and Latin America with Apple's help in terms of technology, curriculum and education policy research.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Banking finance company AU Small Finance Bank has signed a MoU with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to offer Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY).
    • Under the MoU, LIC will give a life cover of Rs 2 lakh in case of death to the customer at a nominal premium of Rs 330 per annum.
  • The Odisha government has signed an agreement with Software Technology Park of India (STPI), philanthropist Sushmita Bagchi, and IIT Bhubaneswar, for setting up the Centre of Excellence for Virtual & Augmented Reality (VARCoE), an incubator for promoting research.
  • The government of Telangana and Clean Authority of Tokyo have signed a MoU in the field of municipal solid waste incineration facilities.
    • They will exchange information on knowledge in municipal solid waste incineration facilities and make an effort to realize human resource exchanges in view of technical cooperation in the future.
New Appointments
  • Indian American Manisha Singh, a lawyer and Congressional staffer, has been sworn in as the Assistant Secretary of State for economic and business affairs in the Trump administration. 
    • She is the first woman appointed to the post.
Science & Technology
  • American electronic commerce and cloud computing company Amazon has launched a checkout-free hi-tech grocery store called 'Amazon Go' in Seattle, US. 
    • It uses ceiling-mounted cameras to identify each customer and track what items they select, eliminating the need for billing. 
    • The purchases are billed to customers' credit cards when they leave the store.
  • US commercial startup Rocket Lab has launched its Electron rocket into orbit and deployed three satellites for the first time. 
    • Rocket Lab has also signed contracts with NASA and Seattle-based Spaceflight for small-satellite launches.
  • Indian Naval Ship Vikramaditya, the Indian Navy's largest ship and its sole aircraft carrier was formally affiliated to the Indian Army's Bihar Regiment.

Awards & Honors
  • Odisha based Mangalajodi Ecotourism Trust has won the prestigious United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Award for Innovation in Tourism Enterprise.
    • The trust was honoured with the coveted award for "Innovation in Tourism Enterprise" at the 14th UNWTO Awards ceremony held in Madrid, Spain.
  • Hollywood Actor-director Angelina Jolie will be honoured by the American Society of Cinematographers with ASC Board of Governors Award
    • This Award is given to individuals in the industry whose body of work has made significant and indelible contributions to cinema.
