- In a move aimed at reducing accidents among climbers, the Nepal's Cabinet today banned solo expeditions on its mountains, including the Mount Everest.
National Current Affairs
- Addressing his last 'Mann ki Baat' programme this year, PM Narendra Modi announced All the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders will attend 2018 Republic Day as chief guests.
- Note : ASEAN and India completed 25 years of partnership.
- All police stations in Telangana will maintain a Facebook and Twitter accounts from next year to communicate with people on a daily basis.
- The state would also establish cyber crime police stations in all districts.
- The Lok Sabha today passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Amendment Bill 2017.
- The Bill debars wilful defaulters and existing promoters from bidding for stressed assets of companies undergoing insolvency proceedings.
MOUs & Agreements
- Turkey today signed a $2.5-billion loan agreement with Russia for the purchase of S-400 missile defence systems.
New Appointments
- BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe has been appointed as the President of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
- He is going to replace Lokesh Chandra, who has recently completed his three-year-term.
- 1983 batch IPS Om Prakash Singh has been appointed as the new DGP (Director General of Police) of Uttar Pradesh.
- He will replace Sulkhan Singh, whose tenure ends today.
Science & Technology
- Sophia, the world's first robot to be granted citizenship, made its first appearance in India during an annual festival at IIT-Bombay today.
- The humanoid robot, which was draped in a sari, had a 15-minute conversation with a student and greeted the audience with a 'Namaste'.
- She talked about India's global stand as an economic, scientific and technological superpower.
Awards & Honors
- Indian-origin scientist Pratibha Laxman Gai has been named for Damehood, the female equivalent of knighthood, for her "services to chemical sciences and technology".
- Note : She is the fourth Indian-origin woman awarded the honour since it was instituted in 1917.
Sports Current Affairs
- Rio Olympic bronze medalist and the only Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, Sakshi Malik, has passed the selection trials to qualify for Commonwealth Games 2018 under 62kg weight category.
- Indian chess champion Viswanathan Anand clinched a Bronze medal at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Riyadh.
- Classical World Champion Magnus Carlsen won the tournament, while Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin finished second.
