The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2017 to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)  a global group working to promote adherence to, and full implementation of, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The campaign, which helped bring about the treaty, was launched in 2007 and today counts 468 partner organisations in 101 countries.

The organization is receiving the award "for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.”

Last year the Nobel Peace Prize 2016 has been awarded to the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos "for his efforts to end his country's 50-year civil war".
