International Current Affairs
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman left for Philippines today to attend Southeast Asian Defence Ministers' meeting.
    • This meeting is likely to review the regional security architecture including China’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
    • Important Note : This is her first foreign visit as defence minister. 
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) today cancelled Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's appointment as the body's goodwill ambassador to help tackle non-communicable diseases such as heart attacks and asthma across Africa. 
    • This comes after WHO member states and activists criticised the appointment, saying that Zimbabwe's health care system collapsed under Mugabe's regime.
National Current Affairs
  • India will celebrate Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on 31st of this month, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to foster and reinforce dedication to preserve and strengthen unity, integrity and security. 
  • The Rajasthan Assembly today tabled a bill that seeks to shield serving and former public servants from being investigated without prior approval from the government. 
    • The bill also bars the media from reporting on accusations against public servants till the sanction to proceed with the probe is obtained.
  • To prevent wastage of funds, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to form a 'UP Muslim Waqf Board' by merging the separate Shia and Sunni Waqf boards.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government is considering imposing a Cyber Security Cess on each online payment.
    • This cess, like the Swachh Bharat Cess, could be used to create better infrastructure to secure digital transactions. 
  • Electric carmaker Tesla has signed a deal with the Shanghai government to set up its own manufacturing facility in the city's free-trade zone in China.
New Appointments
  • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has appointed Suresh Sethi, ex-MD of Vodafone's payment bank M-Pesa, as its MD and CEO
    • Sethi will replace AP Singh who had been the interim MD and CEO since January 2017. 
  • Nitin Seth, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of homegrown e-commerce startup Flipkart has joined US-based technology services firm Incedo.
  • Banking giant HSBC has appointed an Indian CEO after 8 years for its India operations, by naming Jayant Rikhye for the role. 
    • He will replace Stuart Milne.
  • The Indian government has decided to hold dialogue on Kashmir issue. 
    • In this regard, the government has appointed former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Dineshwar Sharma to be the Centre’s “special representative” in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana was today appointed the special director of the CBI.
    • Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer, had been serving in the Central Bureau of Investigation as additional director.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated Malaysia 2-1 in final of the Hockey Asia Cup in Dhaka, to win the tournament for the 3rd time. 
  • Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton won the US Grand Prix.
  • Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth defeated South Korea's Lee Hyun Il to win the Denmark Open, his third Superseries title this year. 
  • Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar won his 8th Asian Tour title at the Macao Open today.
